Few questions about my grand am, please help!
Hello everyone,
I have been having problems with my Grand Am. When i turn the wheel i get all three lights that come on Track off, ABS, and Service Vehicle Soon light. Anyone else have this problem, or know how i can fix it? Another question. I was not eligable for the recall on my grand am for the hazards for some reason, i have to lightly tap on my dash, just above the hazards for my blinkers to work. Most of the time they dont work at all. Anyone know what the problem is? How i can go about getting this fixed? Last Question. When i turn my wheel all the way in either direction, there is an odd noise coming from my front wheels. I have new brakes so i doubt that is the problem. Any ideas? |

Re: Few questions about my grand am, please help!
you need a turn signal/multifunction switch to cure your hazard light problem. The other two problems sound like a bad hub bearing is the cause.

Re: Few questions about my grand am, please help!
In response to your first question:
You have new brakes? I would check to see if one of the hubs wheel speed sensor connectors are loose or if the wires to them are damaged. It sounds like an abs component issue. That is why all three lights come on. The abs light comes on to tell you it's having issues, and because of this the traction control system turns off because it considers abs to be part of it's system. And since the abs is having trouble the "Service vehicle soon" light comes on also because it sees a code from the abs system telling you it has a problem. As for the hazard light issue: I would pull the trim bezel off and check to see if the hazard switch is plugged in properly, it could also just be bad hazard switch. Marc |

Thanks for the quick replies! Has anyone installed this "hazard/turn signal switch" themselves, that can give me any future warning as to what i can expect (troubles, manufacture only part, cost)? Also, when replacing should I disable the ABS?
As far as my ABS light problem, thanks for all the advice, it seems to be a common answer that it has something to do with the brake hub bearing assembly, i will check the wires to make sure....if its not the wires being loose i will probably have to have a new hub bearing assembly installed correct? Thanks again |

Re: Few questions about my grand am, please help!
The turn signal switch is not a difficult change. Follow a HAynes or Chilton's manual, and DEFINITELY disable the air bag before you begin. Depending on what year your car is, the switch is somewhere between $60 and $130.

Re: Few questions about my grand am, please help!
When my ABS light was coming on when turning, I found out it was a control arm bushing. The wheel came off right when I was pulling into the repair shop. Check that too!

The switch is very easy to replace all you need as far as tools go are 2 screwdrivers:a flat head and a phillips. You will want to disconnect the negative battery cable and it will also be easier if the car is in "D" with the e-brake on. Use the flathead (very carefully) to pull off the trim piece that covers your stereo and holds the Hazard and Trac Control switches. It may be easiest for you to remove this piece altogehter, so next use the flathead to depress the notches in the switches and pull the wiring harnesses out from both switches. Also do the same for the cigarette lighter at the bottom. You will need a smaller flathead for this. Now the trim piece will be completely free of the vehicle and you can use the phillips to remove the Hazard switch and put the new one in. Installation is the reverse of course! Have fun and send me any questions you may have. It'll prob take you half an hour to 45 min depending on experience.

Re: Few questions about my grand am, please help!
Thanks robbybumper for the instructions, im not that experienced so im probably looking at 45 minutes, but whatever gets it fixed where i have to spend less i will have to do! It sucks that my car wasnt in the recall list, and its definately messed up. Just so im 100% sure on what im asking for, the turn signal switch and hazard switch would be the same switch correct? Just want to make sure i only have to purchase one switch to solve my problem.

the turn signal and hazard switch are one unit, so it all comes together.
