Question 99 Grand Cherokee LTD Trans Question

Good Morning! Need some help. Im in the process of purchasing my 2nd Jeep. The 93 has seen better times and just rolled 185,000 miles.
Im new to this Quad Trac. The 93 had select trac 2wd.
***I've noticed that when I slow down to a stop, the drive doesn't seem like it shifts down all the way until I take the pedal off from the stop and get ready to give it gas. I can feel it so slightly jerk alittle which makes me think it just now shifted all the way down and not prior to the actual stop. Is this a major warning sign or just something a quad does? Overall the 99' is in good mechanical shape with 80,000 miles and the trans does seem to be ok except for this. Haven't signed the papers yet but thinking of purchasing a warranty on the drive for 1 year just for GP. Hope I can pay for the gas on this V8 and won't have to sell this kids.***

The way it is acting I would purshase the warranty. Might be something simple like a fluid change had the same problem, fluid and filter change solved it. Then again IT might be something more serious.AS for the kids sell them now before they start College!!

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee LTD Trans Question

well the tranny problem sounds like a sticky Throttle Valve (cable), or possibly the Governor Pressure Sensor. I would get the warranty

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee LTD Trans Question

That trans is all electronic. It doesn't have a tv cable or a governor. It might need to have the tcm reprogrammed.Another thing that can cause what they call a bump stop(maybe this is what its doing, maybe not)is the rear driveshaft. The splines on the slip yoke bind on the t-case output shaft. Then it slipos all of a sudden and it feels like the trans just shifted hard or if its really bad, it feels like you got rear ended. They came out with a redesigned driveshaft with a nickel plated slip yoke for that, but usually you can grease the splines.Something cheap and easy to try.

Re: 99 Grand Cherokee LTD Trans Question

Thanks for the replies! Decided to Buy the jeep afterall. Decided to get the warranty too. Any good warranty companies to recommend. I want to compare it to Penn Warranty Corp. This is the one the dealer suggested. As for the trans problem...... This is what my research also came up with...xj31 also suggested the same. Will get back and let you know what it was after the repair is made. Thanks again!

Description: A condition may exist where the vehicles owner may feel an intermittent bump (stop-bump) once the vehicle is brought to a full stop. The repair technician may erroneously diagnose this condition as a delayed transmission down shift into first gear. This condition may occur 3 to 20 seconds following the stop or when the load on the rear driveline is reduced (e.g., when the applied brake pressure is decreased). The stop-bump condition may be the result of a binding between the splined surfaces of the rear propeller shaft slip yoke and the rear output shaft of either the transfer case or the transmission. As load on the driveline is reduced, the bound slip yoke will release suddenly causing a bump-like sensation. The condition may be intermittent. If the above condition has been experienced, then perform the Repair Procedure. The splined surfaces on the slip yoke section of the new propeller shaft are nickel coated to reduce the opportunity of binding.

Details: THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO VEHICLES BUILT BEFORE SEPTEMBER 20,1999. A WJ EQUIPPED WITH A 4.0L ENGINE, A NV242 TRANSFER CASE, AND A 198 RBI (M35) REAR AXLE USES A DIFFERENT STYLE REAR PROPELLER SHAFT THAN THOSE WHICH ARE ADDRESSED IN THIS TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN. FOR THIS VEHICLE, THE SPLINED SURFACES ON THE PROPELLER SHAFT SLIP YOKE AND THE TRANSFER CASE OUTPUT SHAFT ARE GREASED TO PREVENT A BINDING CONDITION AND DO NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT.
