Lightbulb LED XJ tail lights

It's been about 3 months since I broke my left tail light in a towing accident-- D'Oh! A pretty stupid mistake, but fortunate that it was just the tail light. Since this happened It occured to me to mod out my tail light lamps with LED lights. Does anyone know the procedure here if it's possible? I'm at the Colorado School of Mines, so the tools and electrical know how are available.

Lightbulb More on LED lights

Here's what I'm finding. There are a few people who have built new tail light boxes for there older style XJs and mounted LED lights in them. (http://rustysoffroad.com/Merchant2/m...gory_Code=BODY)

I have also found replacement bulbs that use LEDs rather than incandecsents at http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm. This looked pretty neat. for about $40 one could replace all the bulbs in the tail lights with LEDs assuming no extra hardware was needed to simulate the current load of incandecsents. This looked like it is the easiest solution, but it doesn't fix my tail light problem, so I may end up building new boxes. I have the newer style XJ, so I don't want to use the boxes like rusty built (visible on the first link above). If anyone knows of someone who sells metal boxes that match the late model XJ's I would be interested; otherwise, it looks as if I will need to fabricate my own.

Re: LED XJ tail lights

The 1157 LED's will work fine I can't remember if they installed enough resistance in them to load the flasher correctly, but a heavy duty flasher will slow them down a bit.

There is a company out there that sells a clear "euro" lens for the cherokee, but I forget who it is.

Yeah, I found the company, but I didn't want to pay $240 for a set of tail lights assemblies. The LED lamps are about $6 a set.

Re: LED XJ tail lights

Hit up a junk yard for the full stock assy. then put the LED bulbs in them.

Yeah, the dream was too make new offroad-grade assemblies, but that's probably what I'll do.

Re: LED XJ tail lights

I'm off-road mine all the time, but I don't see the need for a completely different fixture that's "off-road grade". The stock ones don't stick out...meaning if you hit somthing (rock, tree, etc..) to break the light....there's going to be more to worry about or chalk up as rock or tree flames.
