Cool 1996 Blazer antifreeze question

Hey everybody -
I have a 1996 Chevy Blazer and it is due for an antifreeze service. It currently had good old Deathcool hehe, in it but I haven't had any problems using it. Anyway I saw that there is a new Antifreeze out by Prestone which is a yellow color that is supposed to mix with any kind of antifreeze and work fine. I was wondering if anybody has used this new antifreeze or if I should just stay with Dexcool which it came with. The dexcool thats in there was changed by the previous owner in 2000 about 20,000 miles ago and is turning a lovely shade of brownish -orange.
Thanks

Dexcool is fine as long as you keep an eye on it. I.E. don't let it run low, don't let it overheat, and make sure your rad. cap is working properly. I just filled up with that "good with any color" stuff and haven't had any problems, but the stuff is kinda new and who knows if it will crud things up and become the next Dexcool-style fiasco. = )

Re: 1996 Blazer antifreeze question

Stick to Dexcool.

Dexcool is perfectly fine and I defintiely know what is causing the problem.

Dexcool does not like to be exposed to air and the one thing on our systems that bring unwanted air into the system is a faulty rad cap.

Replace the faulty cap and your ssytem will no longer gunk up.

Here is a professional document on it.

I bought a 98 Blazer couple of months ago with 60000 miles. The coolant was never changed. I also heard things about Dexcool but decided to stay with it because: 1) the old coolant didn't look too bad; 2) I looked inside the radiator and there didn't look like there was an abnormal amount of deposits; 3) the radiator cap didn't look bad at all 4)one of my engine block drain holes was blocked but I had that happen before on another car with the old "yeller-freeze"; and 5) the engine block drain plugs are located at ridiculously hard places to get to (didn't want to change coolant every two years).

What I did do when changing the coolant was to use a heavy duty flush and to replace the radiator cap.

Yip, I do stress that anyone with a Blazer older than 4 years old should replace the rad cap.

Good job although that cap is a littel expensive.

I hope you didn't get another from the dealer.

Don't replace a defective dealer rad cap with another defective Delco cap.

Get one from your local parts store.
