1987 Golf fuel issue?
Hello,
I have a 87 golf 1.8 ltr 5 speed the issue I am having is when driving the car (doesnt matter sometimes how long) it will start lurching like the gas has been turned off for a second then turned back on again and again. Some times if I put in the clutch and hit the gas it will clear it but as of late when it does this it dies and I have to wait like 10 to 30 minutes before it will start again. When it is doing this "lurching" and I stop the car I get a high pitch whining noise infront of the passenger rear tire (where my fuel filter and the sending unit[I think] is) Once the car has cooled down the noise isnt there as loud, it sounds normal if I put my ear down there. I have changed the fuel filter and the first one I took off when you tap it on the ground it black gas would come out of the filter That corrected it for a bit but then it started again (not to long after the first change like a day or 2) I checked the fuel filter again and it looked good clear gas comming out of it. So after talking to some people here it sounds like either a pluged gas tank, bad fuel filter, or even a possiblty of an intake sensor? so my Question is what should I try to tackle first, the tank, pump, or somthing else? Sorry for the book Kobseryqum |

Re: 1987 Golf fuel issue?
The noise is probably the external fuel pump going bad. Sometimes this can be caused by the internal tank pump not supplying fuel to it. To test you can remove the fuel line coming into the external pump from the tank (unplug the external pump electrical connector also) then turn the key to on & see if you get fuel from the tank pump spraying out the hose. It won't be high pressure, but should pump some fuel for a couple of seconds.

I would try the pump in the tank first, if the transfer pump is bad it may run ok when cold and quit when warm. I wish I had $5 for every transfer pump I've replaced - I could retire!
