Question turbo conversion?

i just rebuild a 4g63n/a for my 92 eclipse i want to swap in a 5speed so then i got to thinking if i have to buy another car with a blown motor why don't i see about one with a turbo 5-speed then turbo my car while i have it down for the tranny swap but since the compression in lowered for the turbo i don't really want to pull my motor back down to change pistons so i was wondering if it would mess the motor up to run the higher compression pistons and the turbo

Re: turbo conversion?

you can run limited boost on the engine. about 6-8 psi. i wouldnt run it no more then that. increase teh fuel supply aswell.

Re: turbo conversion?

yea more or less what i did was my car came from the factory as a non turbo but that engine was trashed when i got the car (threw a rod out the side of the block) so then the only motor i could find was a turbo motor that was burned so i bought that motor and got it to run with the turbo pistons but no turbo on it cuz i didn't have ne of the sensors and ecm now i just rebuilt it and put the non turbo pistons in it and i want a lil more power so i am going to put a five speed in it and while it's down to put the tranny in i think i want to put a turbo on it but i really don't want to pull the motor down again to change pistons so i was wondering if it would hurt to run a turbo with non turbo pistons

Re: turbo conversion?

Well generally you want to lower compression when turboing. I would get it to about 8.5:1 or 9:1 as a fairly good turbo ratio.

Re: turbo conversion?

well, if im correct the 2.0 1g eclipses only have 9:1 compression anyway, so with the right tuning you could run all the boost you want. I am turbo charging my 1.8 right now. All you should have to do is get a turbo and exhaust manifold and some larger injectors. Run an "SAFC hack" either with an SAFC or with the MAF translator (i would suggest the MAFt because this will also allow you to use a GM MAF). In other words get like 30-50% larger injectors and then turn the MAF signal down 30-50% and you computer wont think its wierd that you are flowing 50% more air and as a safeguard get a 1 to 1 rising rate fuel pressure regulator. It should handle 10psi with no problems.
