Re: black smoke?

I think black smoke means one thing....burning Oil, I dont know that much about Celica`s, this is my first One, but I`m sure all cars are similar when it comes to things like that. Not too sure what it is (i`m sure someone more knowlegable than I will be able to tell you exactly what is wrong), sounds like either piston rings, head gasket or Valve seals to me.

Re: black smoke?

Well good luck with it, I hope you get your problem sorted, sorry I couldnt offer more advice but I`d hate to tell you something wrong and get you working on the wrong thing. If you havnt already, get yourself a Haynes manual, a great help and a good book to start learning from.

Re: black smoke?

yeah black smoke is bnot a good thing, could be various things like from a blaon head gasket to a blown motor....how long has it been scince the car ran before you got it? those 22re are poopy when it comes to being re started is it a 22re or 22r? (carburated or fuel injected)

Re: black smoke?

Its possible that the valve seals are gone and are allowed oil to leak into the cylinders. If those are gone you might as well just remove the head and change the head gasket also.

You can also do a compression check and try to locate which cylinder is causing the problem.

I thought black smoke was a fuel related problem and bluish black smoke is an indicator of burning oil. So im with the person who said it's the carb.
