First encounter with SRT-4

This weekend I once again spent 8 total hours on the highway. The only "race" if you can call it worth mentioning was against the SRT-4.

I drove in a pack with a newer Audi A6, dodge avenger, me and the SRT-4 behind me. We hit a little bit of traffic and once it cleared up, the neon went into the far right lane to pass someone (3 lanes). I knew he was gonna go, so I just got behind him. He was in his early to mid 20s. When he gunned it at about 90, he got a little jump start but once I hit it we kept pretty much even. I just followed him, passing the Audi and avenger. The audi didn't try to keep up but the avenger did. All this time I was behind the SRT4 and he wasn't gaining one bit. I shifted into 4th at 110 and I was still keeping up. Now, 4th and 5th are by far slow ass gears in my car. When you go from 3, which is the best to 4, it feels almost like a 2-4 shift. Suprisngly, he only managed to pull a carlength up to 140 - then I slowed down and the avenger wasn't anywhere in sight. The SRT4 guy took the next exit. I wanted to run him from about 50 but I didn't get a chance. I was pretty happy losing by just a carlength considering I was in 4th most of the time.

I slowed back down to about 80 and a few minutes later the avenger passed me.

Now, I know they're quick and their whp is underrated, but could someone tell me what these SRT4s trap? He didn't seem quite as fast as I thought they are. I'm pretty sure that they are faster off the line because of how heavy my car is, but what do they trap?

well those srt4's are supposed to be beasts off the launch with their AWD system, so its not that big a surprise that it wasn't as much as you expected coz you ran from a roll. Wish i could get the chance to race an SRT

SRT-4s are AWD? I was under the impresion that they were FWD or RWD, and the EVOs and STis were the AWDs...

I'm pretty sure they're fwd. I hate the stock spoilers they put on them. I thought they trapped higher than that.

Re: First encounter with SRT-4

Srt4s are FWD, and their launches take time to get good at...by far not an easy car to launch.

I believe sti's are faster in the 1/4, however the sti's gearing isn't great after 100, that paired with the AWD, will probably give the srt4 the advantage in top end.

Anyway...good run Type-S

Thats how I feel. The STI is a much better car then a srt-4. The STI is AWD, the SRT4 is FWD. The STI wins off a launch due to AWD, and it has higher horsepower to compensate for it's top end AWD disadvantage. If someone offers you a free STI or SRT4, take the SRT, cause I got dibz on the STI.

Re: First encounter with SRT-4

Ya the SRT's are FWD and torque steer is horrible, I seen them at the track a few weeks ago. Not to bad though in sport compact car magazine they have the lightweight version with the stage 3 turbo upgrade and turbo toys and it runs 11-12's if I remeber right. If you get a bigger aftermarket turbo theres even more power then the stage3, but ya the STi is definetly better with AWD, more power, better handling.

well i would hope the STI would be better since it costs over a 1/3 more. However the SRT4 engine seems to be taking to mods far better than the open deck STI. The STI guys were severily embarrased by the evos at their last major showndown because they just could not make enough power.

The SRT4 have been praised by every single review for their lack of torque steer. They are given often as an example that a high power FWD car can be made without major TS.

Maybe you were thinking wheel hop.

they weren't complaining about tq steer but more about how the steering wheel stays locked in the turning direction when you bury the throttle in mid corner. you can let off the steering wheel completely and the wheel will stay locked. also when you start making crazy power like the factory hot rod version ( 350whp ) the car understeers like a biatch and its very very scary to drive on a race track hard. you ahve to be real easy on the throttle on corner exits, so it won't spin its tires and plow forward.
