my grandfather has 1986 ford Econoline 150 van every time he starts it it will run fine for five mins. then it just stops when he starts it again it runs really bad and it gets gas in the oil. can anyone help me find the problem. the van has a v6 i believe and when it's running it puts out black smoke.

Re: need help finding the problem

There were no V-6 engines in Econolines until '97. I'm sure that if you have a 6 cylinder, that it is a "300-6" inline six (best engine ever IMO).

From your description, I would guess that the engine coolant temp sensor (or wiring) is faulty so the computer thinks the engine is always stone cold and it is injecting WAY too much fuel. This presumes that it starts WELL and runs well (but gets worse as it warms up) then dies.

Sound right?

Re: need help finding the problem

The computer is injecting WAY more fuel that the eninge can burn (warm), so it just runs down past the piston rings and into the oil.

There is no other way to get fuel into the engine on those with EFI than from the injectors.
