1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
I have recently noticed a strong fuel odour whenever i start my jeep. this is accompanied by horrible gas mileage. i know these get bad mileage anyways but this is crazy. I put in $30 and i need to add more before one day's worth of driving!
no noticeable puddles or leaks can be found on the fuel rail or near injecxtors etc. Seems to hose out the gas whenever cranking. Any thoughts where to look first? Thanks! |

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
since u do not seem to be leaking fuel, the only thing I can think of would be the EVAP Canister is clogged.
and the horrible milage could be contributed to many things, Spark Plugs, Plugs Wires, Air Filter, Fuel Filter, injector cleaning, O2 Sensor(s) (this would illuminate the CHECK ENGINE light), there is prolly a couple other things that aren't coming to me right now. how is the jeep driving, is it running good? and does the CHECK ENGINE light ever come on? |

Jeep runs great, strong as ever. no MIL or check engine light.
Only thing that is constant is that the smell is strongest when cranking or just after a run and shutdown. I do see spilled fliuid after a long crank so i was wondering if maybe it's jetting the fuel during crank but not i nrun. but it wouldn't explain the bad mileage. Also the trip computer does not seem to notice the mileage change. still reports 14.9 L/100km which is normal but it not the "real" fuel consumption as evidenced by how often i need to refill. |

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
does it take long fo rthe enigne to start-up?
if not, I am thiinking that the fuel pressure maybe too high. have the fuel pressure tested. |

I had the opposite problem for some time. i noticed that if i jump in and crank the jeep over it will take up to 20-30 seconds to catch and start. now what i do is turn the key to "on", listen for the fuel pump to stop spinning (pressure build up) then crank and it starts within 5 seconds.
Pressure is probably low to normal but i have honestly not checked it with a guage. Where can fuel in this type of system leak? if it's not the lines could an injector perhaps be stuck open? would that not make the engine run rich? or set an mil? |

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
tech, I think u may be loosing fuel back into the tank. since u have to prime the fuel system to get it to start, u are rpolly loosing fuel pressure when the jeep sits? I woudl have it pressure tested right away this would confirm it. and then start from there, as for the 5 seconds to start, that is still too long, that maybe caused by the fuel pressure or even the CPS (CrankShaft Position sensor) - determines the timing of the Fuel injection and Ignition (spark).
have the fuel pressure tested and let us knwo what it says |

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
Is the regulator installed on the fuel rail? did you have evidence of fuel leaking on your engine or? My problem is that i can smell the fuel strongly around the driver's door area but nothing under the hood, nothing on the ground. it's a really trciky thing.

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
no your fuel pressure regulator is on the Fuel pump Assembly (module), you would have to replace the whole assembly, u cannot just replace the Fuel Pressure Regulator on your Jeep. u might be able to do what ZJ said, but I don't think the Feul Pressure Regulator come off thre module to replace it.

Check the Fuel Lines from the tank to the throtle body. If you are seeing gas it is leaking somewhere Very Dangerous!! Also check the oil to make sure it isnt going in the Engine.

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
the regulator is at the end of the fuel rail, cylindrical shape, has a small vaccum line attached to it & a fuel return line on the other side. I had the same symtoms you wont see the gas, only when it gets worse. Also check the lines from tank to fuel rail.

Re: 1995 Grand Cherokee Fuel Smell
The fuel pressure regulator is on the Fuel Pump Module, thats only on 93 and 94 Models (it's located on the fuel rail), on 95 and 96 it's on the Fuel Pump Module

There seems to be a lot of confusion as to the location of this unit. I've heard now that the regulator is located on the Fuel Rail, Integrated into the fuel filter and now on the fuel pump itself.
Since I have a 1995 ZJ i'm assuming that i do not have the integrated fuel filter/regulator as is seen on the WJ. I was HOPING that i had the fuel rail mounted unit but i'm not near the jeep right now to check. Does anyone have an official answer as to where this unit is located. If it is in fact NOT part of the fuel rail then maybe i'm barking up the wrong tree and my fuel problem lies elsewhere? Does anyone have access to or links to a diagram or pictures showing this system on a 1995 ZJ? Thanks! |
