I'm getting to buy my first car i happened to stuble upon a 93 rx-7. Now i just have a couple of questions. The car is in excellent exterior and interior conditions from what i've seen and it has 111k miles on it. She is asking 6,700 for it. Does it sound like a good deal? If so is it a good idea to have it taken to a mechanic to get it checked out? Can the mechanic tell if the engine is about to crap out soon?


ok last question, assuming the worst how much am i looking to pay for a engine rebuild and new turbo etc. to get it running like new

for $6700, buy it. Plan on rebuilding the motor ASAP, $6700 is a good deal for an FD with a blown motor. It should cost around $1500 to do the rebuild, assuming you do most of the work yourself. Just make sure it hasnt been in an accident, and it has a straight title. Go for it.

Yeah sure redfc, he's gonna do the work himself even though he doesnt know how. My suggestion is to find a shop near you to do it. That way you know its done right and you can get that bitch ported at the same time for like 3000. Also, make sure you know what else is wrong with the car. I wouldnt suggest the 93-96 as a first car (especially if youre young, insurance = OUCH), since alot can go wrong with it.

BUT... 6700 is a steal. (talk her down using having to rebuild the engine as a reason)

i'm under 25 and plan on going under my parents insurence, but still how much money am i looking at paying for insurence?

ALso after engine rebuild, whats the next best thing to invest money in and What the next thing i could expect to replace?

I'm just basically looking for the basics to keep the car running and in good shape.

Well i dont know everything and anything about an RX-7, but i have done alot of research on them and do plan on buying one soon. If i was in your shoes i would rebuild the motor as soon as possible and replace the turbo. if this is all the car needs and if the car is stock excluding turbo, i would install a top of the line racing radiator and fan to cool the engine and maybe go so far as to install a cold air system. for some odd reason these "sports" cars were not equipped with good cooling systems and tend to overheat quite easily. i also know you can by a coolant spray kit from mazda for about 800 dollars and you can adjust it to spray the engine at a certain RPM or do a constant spray. it seems intelligent. but this is just what i would do if i was in your shoes. good luck and hope you have fun with it. btw is it stick or auto?

its a stick and thanks for you input its appreciated. Would you happen to have any links to where i could find those items. And what would be the best turbo to replace the old one with? the same one ? if so where could i find it? any websites i could look to see how much it would cost?
And i dont want to seem like moocher but does anyone have a carfax account who could be willing to check the vin number on the car for me?
i figure i could save myself a little bit of money by asking somone considering the big espense i'm about to make for the car.

Youre buying an FD, but you can't spend $20 for a carfax?

6700 christ. You'd be stupid not to buy it. Even with a super duper rebuild you are getting a damn cheap FD.

Okay...now that youve got the car dont jump into anything to quick. youve got an excellent project and you dont need to blow it now...

For the engine rebuild youve got to find mazda experience near you, and try to get more than one quote if possible. Rebuilding the engine must be your first priority.

Once youve gotten this taken care of, look at the following websites and find the turbo of your choice. I would stick with a single instead of twins. Maybe a stage 2 or 3, and if you wanted to save a little cash manybe go with a remanufactured one.

Once youve gotten your engine and turbo complete...you really need to focus on keeping the engine cool. You could do both...install a racing radiator (pitstopusa.com, crracing.com) and fan and/or install a cold air intake system. Cold airs can easily be found on Ebay for about 50 - 100 bucks. Also, at Mazdaspeed.com...aka Japanparts.com theyre is this very high tech cool down system which uses a water spray for either a certain RPM or a constant spray for about 800 bucks.

Now with a fast engine and no overheaing worries...its time to do your own mods. Several that our popular are header jobs...clutch jobs...and exhaust jobs. If you would like any extra info on these or anything else feel free to let me know.

Once your engine is rebuilt, along with the turbo and the cooling peference(s) of your choice has taken place, your car is good for an average of 80,000 more miles. Remember to keep in touch with the oil and always let the engine warm up before you drive.
