Replacement Shock Absorber Advice Please

I have just brought a 1998 GMC Jimmy 4WD, and want to replace the shocks to get a firmer ride, can anyone advise on replacement shocks, there are so many on the market with a big price variation. The Jimmy is standard ride height and I want to keep it this way.

Any advice appreciated..

Hey there --

I just recently put gabriel shocks (ultras) on my truck. I got em off of ebay for half price. I have been really pleased with them. A stiff though supple ride. Have also heard good things about monroe . . .

Peace,
DZNZ

Bilstiens on my 2000 slt....expensive, but outstanding ride and performance! Easy to replace as well.

Thumbs up

Just as a follow up to the Bilstiens....they firmed the ride up to the point where you barely feel the bumps, and they are in no way a stiff ride. Thye also do not add anything to the height of the truck.

Monroe and Gabriel are for all intent and purposes just a step above the stock option.....you will get what you pay for. BTW....lifetime warranty on Bilstiens....

I replaced my stock shocks with KYB Monomax shocks. I bought them at the tirerack.com. Great shocks, good price. Stronger than OEM, but probably not as good as the more expensive Bilsteins - but I'm 110% satisfied.

not to outdo you, but I am 200% satisfied....one thing I forgot to mention is the notorious "sidesway" is virtually gone with the bilstiens, and the bumps and bumps and potholes are just a muffled, brief "ba-bump"

The bilsteins sound like what I need, where is a good place to get these, what would I expect to pay?

Thanks for all the advice.

I got them at a local dealer, about 90-95$ per shock....but that is only because I was having trouble getting the exact part from the internet dealers. I did not know what suspension type I had. I also did not have the patience to wait for an internet delivery, and was very impulsive. If you know all your info, suspension type etc, you should bea able to find them for 65-75 ea.

Just my opinion, but the price of Bilsteins are just not worth it.
