NEw jersey exhaust laws?

ok so i got a ticket for my exhaust being to loud just like a lot of other teenage drivers out there, wit are tuner cars. so does anyone have a clue wut the decibel peak level is in jersey, or if anyone has fought it n won? i asked a cop in the township i got pulled over in n she didnt even no wut a decibel was, basicly she told me they can just pull u over for having it on. so any help i would gladly appreciate it.

Were you running the engine at high rpms? Accelerating fast? Or just cruising.

Fight it, what I would do is find out how many rpms your car runs at 45 in top gear, and tell the judge that at that rpms your car does not make a loud noice. It would be even better if you could somehow borrow a decibel meter, and measure the decibels from your exhaust at that rpm. That way you have evidence to prove that it wasn't loud.

Try a big music store, maybe a factory that manufacturers music equipment, or maybe even an electronics store/repair shop.

And another thing, make sure that the office acutally USED a decibel meter when giving you a ticket. Make sure that he's just not bs-ing.

Re: NEw jersey exhaust laws?

All right. When you go to court, the officer will testify first, and he will probably say that he was patrolling the highway when he heard you go by and your car had a loud exhaust, blah blah blah. At the end of that, the judge will probably ask if you have any questions for the officer. Then you ONLY ask questions. Ask "Officer, how did you determine that my exhaust was loud? Did you use a decibel meter?" etc.

Then you will testify. You just say that you were going the speed limit at 45 mph, and your car runs xxxx rpms in top gear at that speed, and that's not loud. It would be perfect if you could say how many decibels noise your exhaust makes that xxxx rpms, and measure it at a distance that the officer would have heard you at.

Than the judge will ask if the officer has any questions, probably not, and then he will make a decision based on what he heard, but your chances are probably good at winning, if you follow the format. If you just start yellling "He's just picking on me because i'm young" and stuff like that, the judge will throw your case out.

Hope this helps, and let us know what happened.
