Question 1999 Transmission Whine

Hello; this is my first post, and it's going to be a little long. I've got a 1999 4x4 extended cab, with 70k miles on a mighty 2.7L 4-banger. Well, my transmission "whines" in all gears except 4th. It's kind of like the whine you hear in reverse, but more muted. Going 70-80 mph in 5th, it's high pitched. Not too annoying, unless your radio's off and you really focus in on it.

A friend of mine with a 1997 had the same "problem," ended up having the transmission rebuilt (a worn bearing replaced) 3 times before his warranty expired, and never got rid of the whine. I found several other, older forum posts (yotatech.com & forums.vmag.com) on the subject, and many others have got the "that's normal for Tacomas" treatment from dealers.

So, not expecting much, I recently took mine to the dealer (I have 3 months left on an Extracare warranty). They found "excessive" metal shavings in my transmission oil, and to make a long story short, my warranty authorized a brand new transmission, and I paid for a new clutch. Unbelievable!

However, the sparkling new transmission still whines, only a little less than the old one with 70k miles. Don't get me wrong, I realize how lucky I am to have gotten a brand new tranny, but does this mean these trannies have finite lifetimes, at least as far as 300k+ Tacomas go? What do you guys/(gals?) think?

(I've only heard of this problem in some late 90's Tacomas, by the way...)

Re: 1999 Transmission Whine

have it flushed, if there is any metal shaving in it, that will clean it out. also your rear end can sometimes make a whining noise if its low on fluid

Re: 1999 Transmission Whine

I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma 4-cyl, 5-speed manual transmission with the same issue.... 24,000 miles.

After dealer replaced ALL bearing in transmission, same issue (whine) but even worse.

Field tech at dealer authorized complete replacement of transmission...

Issue is bearing alignment in transmission, caused by case machining during manufacturing.

No service bulletin, but there are others out there with same issue. Found on line in the past.

Good luck...
