Turbo MPG question
There was a boost controller thing done in the subaru section I would check it out if any of you are running turbos, though that is not why I am posting. What I want to know is a stupid simple question - with a boost controller if I turn the boost to zero (which by the way I don't know if you can) make better MPG then with it turned to even mid range on a twin turbo v8?

if you are on the highway, just cruising no. turbos make boost depending on the load. if you are on the highway, the turbos will not be boosting hardly at all so this will not effect gas mileage. but if you are driving around town, the more you turn the boost down the more gas you will save, when accelerating from a stop, because the fuel system does not have to inject extra fuel into your engine to make up for the extra air that the turbos will be compressing into the engine.
so basically yes and no i would think. this is all logically speaking.

Re: Turbo MPG question
K3 has the right idea, but he forgot one thing...the internal factory wastegate. Factory wastegates aren't adjustable. If you have an external wastegate or something strange, sure you could turn your boost to 0, but if you set your boost to 0, the boost controller wouldn't step in at all and the wastegate will will work just as it would in stock set up. I don't think it's possible to run 0psi...you'd have to tweak your wastegate to open before any boost builds...but if there is no boost, what's opening the wasegate?

If you want lower it to 4# boost then you'll be running about the same as a NA. If you want have a dual program ECU made, one program for low boost and the other for high boost. Have the best of both worlds.

Well just looking for better milage. Just found out it only takes 316 rwhp on a 240z from 1970 to pull 12.4s in the 1/4...
The car only weighs 2300 I don't want to go with a 4 cyl. With a V8 I would get around 28 on the hiway. So I am looking into dropping in a Vg30dett So anyone with a VG30dett in a 300zx what kind of MPG do you get? Those cars weigh about 3400 so I should get 2 or 3 MPG better plus have a car that will pull low 12s. Yeah! I hoping to get over or at least 30mpg on the hiway this way. So that is why I ask this turbo question.Look in the subaru stickies there is a boost controller for about 550 bucks (i think greddy) that does exactly what it is supposed to do always. I am willling to pay for that... So I guess the question is those of you with a z32 try seting your boost to 4psi please to see if you get better MPG please! Thanks to all that will enter this experiment. |
