99 Rodeo Automatic with slipage between gears

Alrite, i just bought this 99 Rodeo LSE with 81K and it runs great except for one thing. When accelerating from a stopped position, the gears seem to slip and the same thing happens when you decellerate as well. Now it is starting to happen between 2nd and 3rd!! I asked the guy i bought it from what the deal was and he told me that he took it to the dealer and they told him it was a common problems for newer rodeos. He said something about a slip yoke or something like that. According to him, this was just how rodeos were and it was some sort of manufacturers defect. It is really starting to annoy me and i need some quality input. !!HELP!!

It could be a bunch of simple things to check.

1. Low fluid level.

2. The thumping/klunking from a stop or start is you slip yolk that needs to get greased.

3. Range sensor needs to be cleaned out and lubed up.

Finally your battery maybe weak. Isuzu start to do funny things with weak battery/alt’s.

HAD A VERY SIMILAR PROBLEM! i own a '99 ls 4x4 6 cyl, 59k miles, automatic, and love it!

all of a sudden near 50k miles, I got a hard transition shift from 1st to 2nd to 3rd, both in accelertion and decelaration, it felt like a slip with a loud clunk from the transmission which I could feel.

I went to a reliable trans guy, who serviced the trans, expensive, and did not solve the problem. He the suggested the following, and it solved the problem within a mile of driving the truck. and, the problem has not returned in over 8k miles.

The solution:
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID PROTECTANT WITH LXE (cost about $9)

Worked like a charm! try this before doing anyhing else if the problem sounds similar to mine. I turned out, some parts in the trans needed this as a lubricant. sorry, can't be more technical, just what I remember. But darn glad it worked, had me worried. So happy it worked!

He added it for me, so I don't know what it takes to add it, from memory, it gets pumped into the trans as you would add trans fluid. I do know, the trans is a sealed unit, thus, all fluids are added by an access hole on top of the trans. Probably about 20 minutes of labor for a mechanic, if you did not want to add it yourself.

The cost was minimal, I wish he had done this first, not sure I really needed the trans service, but probably not a bad idea anyways.

if the tranny is actually slipping check fluid level (engine running tranny in neutral) any other way is wrong.... Another thing to look for is a leak at the pass side of the trannyfrom a round black cover on the side of the tranny (accumulator piston cover) one other thing to check for when it does act up notice selected gear on dash, does it match with what actual selected gear is on shift bezel.
