Problem with tire pressure warning light

Today my tire pressure warning light came on. In the past three weeks, it has come on about 4 times. Each time, I check the pressure and reset the light. Each time though, the pressure is only off by MAYBE 1-2 psi in each tire. What do you think could be causing this? I thought there may be a slow leak in one of the tires or maybe a wheel needs to be cleaned. Any thoughts would be helpful. Thanks.

Well, I found my problem. There was safety blade stuck in the tire. The guy at the stealership said that the only reason I didn't catch it was because the gauge I was using was cheap, and the psi was actually off by a lot more than 1-2 psi like I had thought.

i have noticed on the 2001 olds alero, 2001 pontiac grand am's, if u have the tires changed and even if everything is set right, if the car does not like the tires that annoying light will come on!

happen to me i own a 2001 alero, and my brother owns a 2001 grand am!

so that is just a forewaring if that happens...car is very sprecific on what tires it wants for best ride...darm computers!

I have a 2001 alero, and my tire pressure light is ALWAYS on! It drives me nuts! I was on for the past 3 months straight, then, all of a sudden it went off for a day, now it's back on.

Yep. My change oil light is always on too. That won't reset either. Every time my dad is in the car, he gets mad at me for letting the oil light come on. But I have to explain to him that check my tire pressure and change my oil regularly. Just another fault in Alerolemon.

I would take my car in that way when you do actually have a problem with your car, you will know.

I think that the manual covers the issue of new tires and the pressure light. I had the same thing happen and started investigating.

According to the manual---

"..Any time you adjust a tire’s pressure, rotate your tires,
have one or more tires repaired or replaced, or when any
work is done on your vehicle where tires are removed
you’ll need to reset (calibrate) the tire pressure monitor
system. You’ll also need to reset the system whenever
you buy new tires and whenever the vehicle’s battery
has been disconnected.

To reset (calibrate) the system:
1. Turn the ignition switch to ON (engine not running).

2. Press and release the RESET button located inside
of the driver’s side instrument panel fuse block.
The CHANGE OIL light will begin to flash.

3. Press and release the RESET button again.
The CHANGE OIL light will go off, and the
LOW TIRE PRESSURE light will start flashing.

4. When the LOW TIRE PRESSURE light is flashing,
press and hold the RESET button until the
chime sounds.

If the LOW TIRE PRESSURE light doesn’t go off,
repeat the procedure. If the LOW TIRE PRESSURE
light still remains on, see your dealer for service.
The system completes the calibration process
during driving.

The system normally takes 15 to 20 minutes of driving in
each of three speed ranges to “learn” tire pressures. The
speed ranges are 15 to 40 mph (25 to 65 km/h), 40 to
65 mph (65 to 105 km/h) and above 65 mph (105 km/h).
When learning is complete, the system will alert you after
2-8 minutes if a tire is 12 psi (83 kPa) different from the
other three tires. Detection thresholds may be higher and
detection times may be longer on rough roads, curves and
at high speeds. The system is not capable of detection at
speeds greater than 75 mph (120 km/h)..."

I actually didn't bother to do a reset. It looked to me that if you just drove the car with a new set of tires--assuming that the old set was also set at the same pressure--it ought to relearn the new tire pressures automatically. Mine did and the light went off in a couple of days.
