just got a civic hatch and wanna go fast, what do i need?

Ok, here's the situation, i just got a '96 civic hatch with original motor. I was originally going to get a Z28 or a mustang GT but with four tickets insurance doesn't look too kindly on that. So i have a need for speed and my honda gonna have to feed it. One of my first questions is...could it be possible to make this car run 12's, obviously with a motor swap and some sort of turbo set up? As far as the motor swap goes i was thinking somewhere along the lines of a B18 of some sort, if you could kind of help me out on which version to look for because i'm not real sure on the different versions. I'm currently in college pursuing a bachelor's of science in automotive technologies, and will soon be enrolled in a engine overhaul class. So i will be able to build up the motor a bit. But as far as finding a B18, where could i go, where should i go? (mileage on the motor isn't a factor, cause like i said i will be building it from the block up) So if anyone could just point me in the right direction, of where to go, and what to do, or let me know if this is even an achieveable goal, that would be great. thanks for the replies.

Re: just got a civic hatch and wanna go fast, what do i need?

There are 2 motors to consider (since the Integra Type R is pricy and you're going to take it apart anyways), there's the b18b and the b18c1. The B18b is the Integra LS, RS, and GS motor with 142hp (145hp with the JDM version) and 127tq but also has 9.2:1 (9.4:1 with the jdm motor) compression so it's good if you're going to boost it. Then there's the B18c1 which is the Integra GS-R motor with 170hp (180hp with the jdm version) and 121tq (126tq jdm) and 10.1:1 (10.6:1 jdm) compression. So if you're going to boost and want to get to 12's then I'd say go with the GS-R, and start with more hp and a vtec head. Just make sure you have quite a bit of cash and bullet proof the block.

EDIT: forgot about where to get the motor. Here are some good reputable, well known sites:

When you say bulletproof the block what exactly are you referring to, sorry about my lack knowledge on the subject. Also are there any websites or anything i can access to get a full or better understanding of turbo motors and all thier components. Another question, is the 12's idea reasonable or is it just a fantasy?

Bulletproof basically means get head studs, sleeves, forged rods, pistons, ballance, blueprint, and block guard (last 3 are just good ideas not always needed). Check out www.homemadeturbo.com for info. You're also going to need some really good engine management and a professional tune if you're going to be boosting a lot. 12's are definently possible and can be done so that it is reliable, but it will also end up being pretty costly. You'll probably want to do some head work too if you're looking to get as much power as possible. Stuff like port matching the intake manifold and turbo manifold to the head, P&P, turbo cams, full valve train. Also when you're looking for a motor it's a good idea to get one with LSD to get better grip on the track.

Now i'm kind of starting to wonder, whether or not i should just go the V8 route and suffer through the insurance. But on the other hand i would love to have a fast turbo civic, that could spank some stangs or F-bodies. I guess my last question would be should i go V8 if 12's are my goal? Another thing i'm kind of wondering is how much more costly would it be if i got 12's with a B18 or turbo four cylinder, over a V8 running 12's? Basically i want to be able to beat the occasional Z28 or GT stang, would i need to run 12's to do this, assuming the other driver wasn't a complete dumbass and knew how drive. By the way thanks for the help CivicSpoon.
