rear brake light problem

Basically, the rear brake lights on my nephews 96 Rodeo are not functioning when the headlights are on. When the headlights are off the rear brake lights work.

Anyone have any experience with this? Before I tore it down I'd thought I'd check out this forum to see if someone had experienced this, and could possibly isolate the problem for me.

This is my first post, looks like you have a nice resource here.

What a strange problem.

I took a look at the wiring diagram for my 95.5 and as expected, those circuits are completely independent. I also looked at the wiring diagram for the 1996 Rodeo in my Chilton manual, same thing. There is no reason to wire the brake lights through the headlight switch. The brake light feed wire should be hot at all times, fused by CB13.

The only thing I can think of is some sort of wiring foulup at the trailer connector or somewhere else.

Let us know what you find.

Dale
