Re: is this a good scooter
If you want to save money why not get a more affordable scooter? Like the Honda Metropolitan, which costs $1,800.
If you want more of a touring-scooter I would recommend the Hond Reflex. Piaggio is a huge company but I'm not keen part availability compared to the Honda. |

Suzuki also has a scooter. I think it's called the Birdman or something like that. If you are a guy, I wouldn't get the Honda Metropolitan... it's kinda sissy, this coming from a girl.

Im guessing the risk one faces in a scooter on the main road is about same as on a motorcycle. If anything, their pace annoys the hell out of the car drivers behind them. They also like to pull in front of a stopped car on a red light. Sometimes I can't help but feel like running over one when they try to cut me off.
So if you're into riding a motorcycle, I suggest picking up a Kawasaki Ninja 250. The insurance could be a little higher than the scooter, but it gets 65+ mpg. It's 300 lbs and has ample power to be riding on the highway. 0-60 in less than 6 secs. However, if clutching or shifting isn't your thing, then Honda/Aprilia makes some great scooters.

Re: is this a good scooter
If he wanted to travel on the highway I bet the fellow will drive his Jeep. As for driving to and from school get the scooter. How about a sporty-scooter like the Aprilia RS50?

Tetsuo, I believe Z was setting a reference point when he was refering to highways. It helps understand his post and his perspective of the debate. Whatever

Re: is this a good scooter
It's misleading nonetheless. The Kawasaki 250 may have ample power to reach highway speed but I doubt it will make good for overtaking slightly slower vehicles considering that it lacks the grunt to do such a task.
Given that if you only want to have a two-wheeled vehicle for commuting for college-purposes a Ninja 250 is not a bad choice but I wouldn't jump on one. |

Have you ever ridden one on the highway? I have, not a expressway, but a 55 mph zone highway. But would you consider 80 mph school zone speed? Or the fact that it accelerates faster than a Jetta or Integra on the higher rev is considered lacking in grunt? How about 14.7 sec quarter mile? And which part was misleading? Nowhere did I suggest anyone to drive it on the highway. There is a difference between capability and actual application.
This doesn't make sense: "but I doubt it will make good for overtaking slightly slower vehicles considering that it lacks the grunt." Im guessing you meant "slightly faster"? Because obviously, according to given power to weight ratio (27 rwhp: approx. 300-320lbs), it CAN overtake vehicles that are slower than the Ninja 250, i.e. Acura RSX (210 claimed HP: 2750 claimed lbs) which could finish a quarter mile from low 15s to rarely high 14 sec.

Re: is this a good scooter
I was refering to overtaking vehicles on the highway. I can't imagine the bike rolling onto other speeds effectively but that's just me. I own a 600 and that feels slow. I doubt that a person will be able to get a 14.7 seconds consecutively so to me it's irrelevent. I don't see the person who brought this topic into fruition will do so either.

Bulldogg, I don't think any of those scoots are available in the US. The few pics I actually went to were from overseas. Granted, I have been wrong before...
