I recently got a 1966 Mustang and the guy i bought it from said the engine was a "K" code hi-po 271 hp 289. It has the valve covers that say its a 271 horse but on the vin tag it states it as a "C" code 225 hp 289. I was wondering if there is a way to find out wether it just has the 271 hp valve covers or if it is really a 271 hp 289.

the 289 hi-po has chrome steel valve covers, an open element air cleaner, a dual point autolite distributor (without vacuum advance), an extra wide harmonic balancer, and cast-iron exhaust headers.On the head (under the valve cover) should be stamped 289 with 2 dots above it. it should have screw in rocer arm studs. It also has wider main bearing caps. Also all k-code blocks had the VIN stamped on the block on the right front side by hand, so it may appear sloppy or fake. the 289 hi-po has a pretty agressive flat-tappet cam and a stamped steel, slip on crankshaft counter weight to make up for the heavier rod bolts. There are also a few other small changes to look for but they are easily copied so i chose not to list them. hope i helped, and let me know when you find out if it is a hi-po.

which VIN are you referring to? On the door jamb or the block? previous owner could have swaped in the K code 298 but if the block has the C stamped into it then you've been scammed. I know the exhaust manifolds (not headers) are larger than a standard 289. Without actually looking at the engine, it's hard to tell since most everything bomexsaturn mentioned can easily be faked. Your best bet is that if the VINs don't match, you probably don't have a K code. If you go to fomoco.com/forummain and post your problem there to "Mr. F" he'll be able to give you a better idea of what to look for.

Ok, Thanks to you both. It seems like the other owners switched the engines out so i think i have a hi-po. Thanks for the link stanger42, ill have to go check that out and post it there as well.
