91 Caprice Classic Igniton replaced, now won't go into gear

Help!!! my son broke off the key in my ignition, so I had friend replace the ignition with a new one. Now my car will start again, but it won't go into gear. He is now saying I need to replace the whole steering coloum. I have never had a problem with the steering before. Is it possible this is just a saftey theift device or prehaps a fuse. Please help if you have any ideals. I don't have a clue

I really doubt the need for an entire steering column. sounds to me like the switch and lock mechanism were not re-installed properly. Normally I suggest a factory service manual for help on this one. But I think even a Haynes or Chiltons will provide you with the answers that you need.
