Hi- My name is Kristen and my husband and I just purchased a 2002 Intrepid- There are a few things that we so far have questions on, first we just realized there is no owners manual- so we are going to be working on that---
My first question is-- the car, did not come with remote keyless entry(that we know of) there are no remotes...can this be added now? We have two small children and its a pain to try and remember to lock the doors!!! LOL!!! Second, our stereo doesnt work- its under warrenty, so we are taking it to get fixed...but I wondered if it was something that is common...it lights up- but there is nothing on the screen where the clock and numbers and stuff go-- And lasty, are there any known problems that these cars have, that we should watch out for? Thanks everyone for you help! We are pretty clueless car people!!!

The stereo in my LHS (same body, and more or less the same car) didn't work when i bought either, same problems. It's been fixed and works perfectly now. There aren't too many common problems after the 01' model year. Dodge fixed most of them by then. Things to watch for however: If you have the 2.7L engine, it needs to be maintained according to the service schedule i.e. oil changes and other regular maintmence. Most people overlook this, and this engine is not forgiving. A lot of people will recommend a synthetic oil such a mobil 1 for this engine. The 2.7L has a bad history of problems, but for 2002 dodge corrected most of the issues. Just taking care of it will get you many many miles of happy driving. The Transaxle in most chrysler cars is the weak spot in the drivetrain. but it's not as bad as some people think. Again, if you stick with the scheduled maintmence, you will be fine. Just remember, this trans takes a special fluid. Mopar ATF+4. No substitions. There are aftermarket brands that claim to be ATF+4 compatible, none of them are. The trans is fully electronic, using solenoids to control fluid flow. Using the wrong fluid will screw with them, and eventully cause damage to the friction plates. That all equals big $$$ in repairs. If you need trans fluid, go to your dealers service counter. There was a few recalls issued for these cars, but i'm not exactly sure which are out there for 02' Check it out here Dodge's recall check It will tell you about any uncompleted recalls for your car (you'll need your vin number) I know there is one for the shifter, with enough force it may be possible to pull the shifter out of park without the key in the ignition. with kids around, you might want to make sure that has been fixed

Re: New with a few questions...
In addition to LHSDriver 01, there are a few things you can do. Yes, go to e-bay and you can buy a transmitter for keyless entry. Here's a question, does your car come with cruise control? If not, you have the sales code option 22C, that is just the basic Intrepid with nothing more than power windows, locks, A/C, auto and the 2.7 V6. The owners manual can be bought on ebay as well; just in the search field type: "Dodge Intrepid" it'll be a broad search, but they always have owner's manual for your year vehicle there. One thing that I wanted to add in addition to LHSDriver01 is that the actual recommend transmission fluid for the Chrysler 42LE transmission is actually Mopar 7176. I work for a Chrysler dealership and that is all we use in those transmissions in addition to its sister transmission the 41TE found in Caravan, Stratus, Sebrings, etc. Other than that, the Intrepid is a highly reliable car. I have a 2002 as well and have not had any problems since I bought it a year and a half ago. One last thing, if you don't have the keyless entry option, you can go to www.rtautoparts.net and order the Remote Keyless Entry module for $89.10 plus shipping and handling. On that website, they have a lot of neat items to customize your Intrepid the way you want it.

actully, Mopar 9602 fluid (ATF+4) is factory fill on 99+ vehicles, and i forget the year, but after some point, is also used as the power steering fluid....
heres the TSB: *********************** NUMBER: 21-006-01 GROUP: Transmission DATE: Jun. 29, 2001 THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN 21-16-99, DATED OCTOBER 22, 1999, WHICH SHOULD BE REMOVED FROM YOUR FILES AND NOTED IN THE 1999 TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN MANUAL (PUBLICATION NO. 81-699-00004). DISCUSSION: A new transmission fluid (ATF+4(R) - Type 9602) has been developed and is being used as factory fill for all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions. Until now, vehicles originally filled with ATF+2 or ATF+3 were to be serviced with ATF+3. Effective immediately, it is recommended that all vehicles with Chrysler automatic transmissions except for 1999 and earlier minivans be serviced with ATF+4(R). ATF+3 should continue to be used for 1999 and earlier minivans because of the potential for torque converter shudder during break in. For all other applications the ATF+4(R) fluid offers significant benefits as outlined below. NOTE :ATF+4(R) MUST ALWAYS BE USED IN VEHICLES THAT WERE ORIGINALLY FILLED WITH ATF+4(R). NOTE :SERVICE INTERVALS DO NOT CHANGE. THE SERVICE INTERVAL CURRENTLY IN EFFECT FOR A GIVEN VEHICLE SHOULD CONTINUE TO BE FOLLOWED. NOTE :ATF+4(R) IS COMPATIBLE WITH ATF+3 AND CAN BE USED TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT CURRENTLY HAVE ATF+2 OR ATF+3. DO NOT USE ATF+2 OR ATF+3 TO TOP OFF VEHICLES THAT HAVE ATF+4(R) FLUID. BENEFITS ^ Better anti-wear properties ^ Improved rust/corrosion prevention ^ Controls oxidation ^ Eliminates deposits ^ Controls friction ^ Retains anti-foaming properties ^ Superior properties for low temperature operation FLUID COLOR Mopar ATF+4(R) is a World Class Fluid having exceptional durability. However, the red dye used in ATF+4°R is not permanent; as the fluid ages it may become darker or appear brown in color. ATF+4(R) also has a unique odor that may change with age. With ATF+4(R) fluid, color and odor are no longer indicators of fluid condition and do not support a fluid change.

Re: New with a few questions...
LHSDriver01, I stand corrected, my service manager is an idiot and hasn't informed us of the update; I guess he's old school. Back to 2002intrepid, chances are, you might have keyless entry. Go on ebay and buy one, it only costs $20. The part # that you need to look for is (this is one the back of my remote) P/N 04602260 AA. You can go to your local dealership to have it programmed for about $45. If you want to be really frugal, there is a way to program it yourself.

Re: New with a few questions...
The only way to program yourself, is if you already have at least one that works. If the dealer is going to charge you to program each one (if you want more than 1) then go ahead and pay to have one programmed and then program the rest yourself. Programming is in the owners manual once you get one.

Re: New with a few questions...
Interpid woes already!!!The key does open the glove box...not the trunk- It does not have the keyless entry option, not sure where I can find it, but with 2 kids its kind of a must!!!
Anyways, we have already had problems, it over heated and we have to have it towed to a dealership- they said the cooling fans seized up- Not sure why, but they were replaced along with the fuses and the motor for them..Anyone know where I can get a good extended warenty? Thanks! |

these fans are famous for seizing up. also you can add power locks to your system.... I think the rke module costs around 120$ or so, it also comes with 2 rke's. The dealer will charge .5hrs..I think somwhere around there... times whatever labor rate, all they need to do is remove the bcm and plug the rke module in, and program the rkes... Talk to your service advisor..this may be the part #46023 10AB or 46024 15AB good luck!!

Re: New with a few questions...
you can buy the remote keyless entry module at this website www.rtautoparts.net. It sells for $89.10 and will take about 5-7 days for you to receive it. Programming comes with the kit, so you can do it yourself w/o having to go to the dealer and dishing out $50 to have them program it.
