starting problems & high idle

My 1998 Malibu LS V6 has recently developed a major starting problem--need to press gas pedal down a bit to start engine-that's not even a guarantee to start it, then if it starts the rpms race up to 2500-3000 for a bit...any ideas what could be wrong?...a friend said it could be the TPS-throttle position sensor.

check the harness connector for the IAC, if its ok, clean the IAC (idle air control), it sounds as though its stuck open too far.
