Starter problems with motor swap.

Hey guys, I swapped in a 99 GSX motor into my 95 TSi FWD. I used my 95 tranny, and one bolt didn't line up for my starter and now it grinds against the flywheel when I start up. Does anybody know if my tranny will work with this motor? How do I attach the starter so it won't grind? Thanks.

Re: Starter problems with motor swap.

The GSX flywheel is smaller than the FWD flywheel. The starter plate (attached to the block) MUST match the tranny, and the FW has to match the tranny. Odds are you left the GSX FW on there, as well as the GSX starter plate. You want the FWD starter plate and flywheel attached to the AWD motor. (there is no difference between motors, but you know what I mean)

Hope that helps.

Re: Starter problems with motor swap.

One other thing. When we used the FWD FW, but we kept the GSX starter plate. When we realized the starter wasn't lining up, we cut the starter plate to mount the starter with the tranny. Can you see any reason why that wouldn't work?

Re: Starter problems with motor swap.

The tranny will still put the starter too far away from the smaller GSX FW. But when you swap to the right FW, the cut plate will be fine. I'm assuming you jsut made the hole bigger, toward the bellhousing.

Re: Starter problems with motor swap.

We used the right flywheel. But we used the gsx plate, which we cut to make the starter bolt to the tranny. So we're using the fwd tranny and flywheel, and then we're using the AWD motor and starter plate.

I did a 6 bolt swap in my 98 gst-I had the same problem as your are having. No one in our club had ever experienced this. I ended up pulling the engine 3x's that week trying to figure out why my crank would only turn so far then stop. When we finally narrowed it down, it was this fricken starter bolt "hole". I just ended up griding where it was hitting, put it back together and haven't had a problem with it since. (It's been 3 months) Good Luck

That should be fine. Have you tried it yet?

And girls that use grinders are badass in my book.

Sorry, had to do it. Any girl that works on cars is cool, IMO. I just like to see women getting into the sport. Especially ones that arent afraid to do some work. My ex had a 340 whp Si that she did a lot of the motor work on. Drove pretty damn well too (I taught her everything she knows of course ). I run into a very few at the track, but its always good to see. All right, back on topic you post whores.

Re: Starter problems with motor swap.

What I'm saying is that we used the right fw from the beginning, and I'm getting a grinding sound. That's why I'm confused. We've always had the fwd flywheel in the car, just the wrong starter plate, but we trimmed the starter plate. That's the one and only set up we've tried and it didn't work.

I'm telling you, we thought it was the plate too...it ended up being (I'm gonna try to explain this as best I can) look inside the housing at the spot were you put the bolt threw the starter and attach it-take a real close look at it (the part that indents inside the housing for the bolt hole) Look and see if that indent is sticking out too far and hitting your fw. That was my problem and it took me forever to figure it out. I just grinded some off the indention so the fw didn't hit anymore-no problems
