Exclamation Camero Shifting Problem - Please Help

Hi,
I have an 89 Camaro RS. Just yesterday I drove it to work and it was driving fine. Then I got to take it home and it has some major problems. Everytime I start it if I pop it into any drive other the P and N it spudders and then stalls out after about 2-3 minutes. When I drive it, it seems like it has a huge lack of power, as if it isnt shifiting right. It will rev up but really slow and then when it is supose to shift it kicks back then shifts. I am hoping I dont need a new tranny, but outlook is not good. Does anyone else know if a different part could be causing this problem, like the Timming Belt or anything. Please help! My beast of a car is in need of some friendly tender love and care.

sounds more like an engine problem to me. a few things to check are the throttle position sensor, and the map sensor. is the check engine light on?

Re: Camero Shifting Problem - Please Help

i agree, the engine runs differently depending on wheather or not there is a load on it. when you put it in gear, you slow the engine down, could be a lot of things. have you ran the car for error codes??

Re: Camero Shifting Problem - Please Help

Well I just talked to a guy who specializes Camaro's and I am taking it in tonight so he can look at it. He said he thinks it could be the tranny and lucky me... he has 3 sitting around and is willing to sell me a new engine and tranny for $1200.00

i bet he'd be more than happy to sell ya an engine and tranny for $1200. but i STRONGLY suggest you get a second opinion before you go changing the engine and tranny. your problem could be as simple as replacing a $45 component

dude before you go spending money go through your gears manually like 1,2,3 then od if it shifts nice from 1-3 then its not your tranny and probly a sensor or a computer error for say the exhaust or intake becuase like someone said the engine slows down when in gear id check timing, and get a diagnostics done on the computa.

It's a good thing your taking it to someone who will give you an honest and unbiased opinion. What ever your problem is, it's either the trans or the engine, so why is he in such a hurry to replace both on your car. This guy is an ass. Take it to someone else, hell anyone else and see what they say. You might have a sensor that's going or some fuel problem, either of which can be fixed relativly cheap. Or you could shell out $1200 with no guarantee of the condition the replacement parts are.

Re: Camero Shifting Problem - Please Help

if its acting like this, it has error codes.

This is my biggest pet peve with people working on cars nowadays. ill let you in on a secret, your car has an on board diagnostic system. OBD I, the car will tell you whats wrong with it. any mechanic worth his erector set would know that, and would have ran the car for codes to find out what was wrong with it, rather than scratch his beer gut, spit some tabacci in a spittoon and tell ya, "Yup, were gone hafta throw a whole new drivetrain in the feller, and see if she clears on up." thats the most innane thing ive heard in a long time, dont ever take your car there again, the guy dosnt know his ass from a coolant fitting. Run the car for codes, and get back to us, well help you from there.

Well I didnt end up buying new engine and tranny, even though I am replacing them still... yes i got the second opion on the engine and tranny i am purchasing... so they all check out good.

Back to my cars problems...
Turns out you were the closest to being right. It ended up being the left fuel injector wire connection. It is dead... so I need to replace the wire and have the computer all checked out. heh kinda sucks having a V8 that is only using the right 4 cylinders

Re: Camero Shifting Problem - Please Help

my car is going to be change into a drag racing car.. and it has 120k miles on it so changing it to a bigger engine and stronger tranny that only have 60k for $1200 seems like the cheapest way i could change it
