Question Q Octane

Just curious... there is a gas station nearby with 110 race gas... um what might be the chance that I could use it? Would mixing 1/2 race with 1/2 93oct. give me 101.5 octane? lol I've always wondered if that works that way..... Thanks lol

Re: Q Octane

As long as it's unleaded you will be fine. You can run leaded gas, but I think it kills your cat and o2 after awhile.

Re: Q Octane

IF you have at least 1000 miles on your O2 it will sirvive fine with leaded gas. I run a few gallons a week through the car for years. If you run it on a new sensor it reportedly wont last the night though. I never bothered to test that theory, too expensive But other locals have. The cat though is another story. I started get cat CELs after a couple months of weekly leaded fuel usage.

You are correct in averaging the two fuels. You can do the same thing with odd proportions too. Like 8 gallons 93 and 2 gallons 110 would be 96.4, etc.

The way I run this stuff is to empty the tank first. I put a 6 foot 1/4" fuel line on the fuel pressure regulator output and stick it in a jug. Then run the car (or kick the pump on in DSMlink) until the pump has emptied the tank into the jug. Anything less than a quarter tank on my car will fit in a 5 gallon jug. THEN add the race fuel, 5 gallons. I run 117 octane, at 8 something a gallon, so this first fill up is expensive When racing is over and its time to go home, I use the same procedure to pump out the race gas into a second jug. Then add in the pump gas I pulled out. I usually get 3-4 gallons back out of the car, so the next week I only have to buy a gallon or two of the expensive race fuel.

This will get you your moneys worth, and limit the amount of leaded fuel the O2/cat have to deal with. The example above with 8/2 gallons would be running lead through the motor for a couple hundred miles. If you are just going to try it out or dyno for the day, etc, just run the tank to the E mark and add ~2-3 gallons. Dont fill up again until you run it down to E again. On the dyno you can run the tank pretty low. If you are going to be driving the car, try not to go below 1/8th tank, since the fuel may slosh around and allow the pump to pick up air.

Not sure why I just went through all that, I cant even remember wtf the question was. Oh well, enjoy...

Re: Q Octane

LOL... thanks kevin!! i'll have to give it a try sometime...I'm not sure but I think it is unleaded 110 oct. If there is lead in it then it would go just fine with my paintchips!!! lmfao

As for the O2/cat... I have high flow cat and 2nd O2 already gave me a CEL...reset codes and it comes back after 40-50 miles......

Re: Q Octane

I probably wouldnt worry about it being leaded then. I dont think I've ever seen 110 unleaded, and unleaded up to the low 100s (like 104) is almost as expensive as the leaded 117 If its a sunoco station, its most likely CAM2, a very popular 110 octane leaded race fuel. A handful of local stations here sell it as well.

Re: Q Octane

Any drag strip should sell the good stuff. If you find it at the pump anywhere consider yourself lucky. And the nozzle is too big to fit the car anyway, you have to put it in a jug (emissions law). Race tracks have drums of the shit in a dozen different octane ratings.

Re: Q Octane

cant there be dangers putting in 100 octane unleaded fuel in your car if your just driving it around the streets, instead of the track? Could it mess up your car?

Re: Q Octane

I already answered that question. The O2 sensor has to have some mileage on it, and the cat wont last long.
