Re: Ticking noise when i turn

CV's are going out most likely, determine which side by sound and do this...

jack up the car with it in gear.
grab the wheel you suspect the noise coming from.
move it back and forth (like it's spinning) and if there's a lot of play then it's the CV.
While there, place your hands on the top and bottom of the wheel and give it a push/pull motion, pull on the bottom while pushing on the top and the opposite.
if there is a bit of play there as well, you need new bearings as well. Half shafts are the way to go, just take out the old axle, and pop in a new one, no fuss no muss. if you need to replace the half shaft let me know, I've done quite a few sets now and can just about describe how to do it by memory.

Re: Ticking noise when i turn

I heard a ticking noise on my 98.
Turned out I had a bearing that self destructed in my tranny.
if you can do the check on a hoist, that is the best thing.

The ticking noise could well be the CV joints. Had this trouble on my 1982 Ciera. GM wanted over $300 to replace them. went to a local garage and they removed the offending CV joint cleaned it up removing some dirt in there replaced the boot which was split and cahrged my $20 A small tick remained for as long as I had the car but this was soon forgotten and did not affect the performance of the joint in any way. Now I have a rather loud noise when I go to full left lock. This appears to be another boot this time in the left McPherson suspension. The bottom of the boot has ridden up and catches the spring at full lock. My mechanic assures me that this will not impact the shock and I have now cut the offending piece off. Any Comments?

Colin
