Will this work?

Can you import a vehicle into the country that doesnt comply with U.S. NHTSA and DOT laws with the intentions to take it to another country shortly after it arrives in ports? Will it be accepted if you have intentions on taking it to another country or will it be retained and confiscated immediately? If anyone here works at the U.S. Customs or has experience with them please tell me.

for the car to be released onto the US streets, it will have to be released from customs. if the car is not street legal in the US, customs wont release it. that simple.

Here's what they say about temp import of a vehicle intended for export:

Now what they aren't mentioning there, is that they will be following up on it. Their usual time limit is one year for it to be allowed in the US. The vehicle has to be exported, you can't even junk it in the US. If you fail to do so, they confiscate it and crush it for you at your cost. And obviously you cannot use the vehicle on the road.

Depending on how/why you are going to import-export in such quick order, I would say you would be better off not even actually doing it---send it straight to it's destination. If possible you might be able to have it offloaded in an "international trade zone" (I am not personally sure how many of these exists in U.S. Ports, but an fairly confident there is one in Charleston, Savannah, and know for a fact of the one in Miami) where it can wait to be put on the next ship.
Still, like I said, less hassle and potentially cheaper to just send it straight to it's final destination. If your goal is to get a picture of your car in the USA, it is never going to happen (technically).

When you have to ship a car back do you have to ship it back to the country it came from or can you ship it to another country any where out side the U.S? What I meant was can you have a car imported temporarily and then put it on road back and take it to Mexico or Canada?

it goes to the port of origin. this is a common question, people think you can just ask customs to ship it here, or ship it there. more often than not, the car will be crushed, not shipped.

There are two different ways the intended for export can be used. One is for a vehicle to go into the US for repairs, and then shipped back to it's point of origin. The other way is how my Skyline was in the US for a VERY short time. It was shipped from Japan to England, instead of going on a boat the entire way, it was shipped to the US, sent across the US, then shipped from there to England.

Using the intended to export, you'll have to have it's final destination marked and scheduled. If they see that it's only arriving in the US, and not scheduled for anywhere else, they're going to question it.

Plus, if you do this, when you ship it to say Canada or Mexico. You're gonna have to deal with what needs to be done there. For example, you send it to Canada, and you don't have it picked up. When the shipper unloads it, it's not like they just have it sitting in a gigantic parking lot, the dock yards are very expensive real estate. Usually, they have a very short grace period that the allow it there with no fees (mine was two days after customs checks). After that, for every day it sits, dock fees get added up for you to pay. For example, if I didn't get my car within those two days, I would have been charged ~$200 a day dock fees for every day it sat there past the grace period.

Are you saying the car has to be shipped it has to be shipped back to the port it came from. I was hoping you could ship it anywhere and they not care so long as its out the country. And are you saying when you have to ship it back to the port it came from they will more and likely crush it or when you ask to ship it somewhere else they will probaly crush it.

they ship it back to the point of origin. you dont get to chose where it goes, customs does. but this is an unlikley case, most often than not, if you are caught with an illegal car in the US, they will crush it.

Even with the intention to export? I didnt mean getting caught with the car illegally. I ment importing the car with the intention to export. Are you saying even then that will happen? If a car is imported temporarily cant it be driven on the streets?

why import it just to ship it again. if your trying to sell this cars, buy them from japan, and then sell them and ship them directly from japan. and if the car is imported on a temporary bond with customs, it cannot be driven on the street. read what weve been saying.....CAR HAS TO BE STREET LEGAL TO BE DRIVEN ON THE STREET!!!!!!!!
