NEVER SHOULD A SPORTING EVENT LEAD TO A DEATH

--For anyone unaware, a 21 year-old girl was killed when a "nonlethal" projectile, shot by a police officer, hit her in the eye last night during the celebrations outside Fenway--

I'm very VERY disappointed in the disgusting conduct exercised by some of the Red Sox Nation fans at Fenway park last night. What the hell is wrong with people? I certainly hope this isn't indicative of my entire generation (and the future of our country.) If so, I'm going to pack my bags, phone MTV and condemn them for trying to push these idiots out to vote, and hop a plane outta here. I blame the police for a shameful failure to control both themselves AND the crowds they KNEW would amass. I blame the city of Boston for failure to properly manage the situation. And of course, on behalf of all the fans who celebrated responsibly, I blame the braindead, immature, and obviously pathetic excuses for human beings who decided a proper celebration involves tipping cars, fighting, inciting riots, vandalism, and every other disgusting act that took place. We are witnessing history unfolding here with the Red Sox, and I can't believe there are people who seem to have no problem writing disgraceful chapters into this book.

Because of the riots, the city of Boston is considering outright suppression of any potentially rowdy celebrations, by possibly imposing a curfew, potentially mandating that no Boston bars are to broadcast the World Series, and who knows what other measures. I just hope a handful of F%&kups didn't ruin it for the rest of us.

Whats my point? No sporting occasion is worth dying for? No sport deserves to have the sort of people who have celebrated the way they did after the victory.

May the girl rest in peace and hopefully something will have been learned from it.

That is a pretty dumb statement right there. My point (had you grasped the reason behind my post) was that NO sporting event is worth a person's life. Of course I hold the police just as accountable as everyone else (hell, the commissioner accepted full responsibility) when idiot fans show a blatant and disgusting lack of proper conduct, it falls to the administrative forces that be to respond with the correct code, not simply firing tear-gas balls into crowds at HEAD HEIGHT. To add to the fiasco of events here, the Boston Herald's current addition has, on the front page, a full size, full color picture of the girl laying bloody on the cold concrete, with her shirt pulled up around her chest, and a couple people milling around her (You can see it on their website.) Meanwhile, right IN THE PHOTO are a couple officers just standing there. They didn't even attempt to cover her up at least, they're just standing around with their thumbs in their asses. Do I think the police wanted to be there, in harms way, trying to control the crowd? Of course not. But then again, they took the damn job. Do I think the victim and her friends should have exercised more restraint, and abstained from going down to the Kenmore Square area? Yes, I most certainly do. But it's not a mistake she should have paid for with her life.

I dont think there has ever been a riot in Europe where 80+ people have died, lots of serious injuries yes. No i dont think it is the cops fault,no matter what they do, if some idiots are hell bent on causing a riot, its gonna happen no matter what the police do so dont blame them. the fault lies solely at the feet of the idiots going out for a fight. Noone deserves to die for any reason at a sporting event, to say "shit happens" is just stupid, imagine if that was your Wife, girlfriend or sister, would shit happen then??????? Dont go down the road that the UK went down a couple of years ago with football(soccer) hooligans, it just ruins things for the genuine fans. Fans of sport the world over should hang thier heads in shame and say "never again will we let this happen"
