Yeah, the first thing is that I think the '87 GN/GNX is a nice car is because it's well-built and fast.
GNX: 3.8L V6 Turbo 276 bhp @ 4400 rpm, 360 ft-lb @ 3000 rpm. GNX: 0-60 in 5.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 13.43 seconds @ 103 mph. That's for the GNX, but the GN is a bit slower. '69 Comaro(COPO 9560) 427 V8 430bhp @ 5200rpm, 450lb-ft @ 4400rpm. (COPO 9560) 427/430bhp: 0-60 in 5.3 sec, 1/4 mile in 13.16 sec @ 110 mph. Now that '69 has a huge engine(427 V8) and is only thenths of seconds beating the GNX. GNX only has the little 3.8L V6, but it also has a turbo. Well, i guess what i'm trying to say is that engine size isn't everything.(and the GNX is a sweet car) One question what would it take to get a GN to about 500 bhp?

My favourite car is an Alfa Romeo Spyder; the classic one from the mid '60s to the mid '90s.
My favourite American car is either the early-mid '60s Lincoln Contintental 4-door convertible or the '71-'73 Buick Riviera "boattail" coupes. Or some other one I haven't thought of yet. |

I just wanted to know what would it take to get the GN to 500 hp, and how big is the turbo?
I don't own a GN, but I plan to get one. My dad had a Buick T-type so that's the only one I've got to be in. Keep the feedback comming!

Re: The GN is good
Keep in mind that the figures on the sixties cars are in SAE gross, not SAE net, and they weren't as efficient at getting power to the wheels. I'd take the GNX any day

The Goal of 500 seems easier than 700 or 1000, and then there is the money issue. I'm talking about at the wheels.
(and yeah there is only 547 GNX made so I think he means GN) (i thought it was cool when i just saw a GNX let alone even seeing one for sale, and plus I would think that most people would keep the GNX in some place and not drive it much.) |

Re: The GN is good
I'm saying if I could have any turbo Buick, I'd take the GNX. I realize that it's much easier to find T-Types and Grand Nationals.

The GN was rated by Car and Driver in 86 0-60 in 4.9. The GNX was also tested by C&D and they posted 0-60 in 4.6 on it.
If you want info on these cars try the following sites as there is a wealth of info there: www.gnttype.org www.turbobuick.com www.turbobuicks.net www.t6p.com www.turbobuicks.com www.efi-street.com

Re: The GN is good
I just bought an 87 GN in June of last year with 50K original and it is an awesome vehicle. I'm old enough to remember when it was new in 87, but now, I'm enjoying owning one.
I do all of the work myself and have made a few modifications and now it spins 1st & 2nd gear with the stock turbo. They don't make cars like they used to with full frames and don't have one rattle in it 17 years later. Some insurance companies also will insure it as a classic if you meet the requirements. I was glad I was able to because it costs peanuts to insure that way. Marc |
