running high rpms.

well i got my front suspension replaced on my car, i drove the car today, and it seems that it is running a little high in rpms, in 5th gear doing 55 mph its running at 1900 rpm, does that sound right for a 305 tbi? my brothers trans am runs around 1500 rpm, he drove it and said that my guage was wrong. in the lower gears im running any were from
2000-2500 rpm.

Re: running high rpms.

What rpm was it before the work? The stock tach is notorious for being inaccurate in third gens. Mine usually says @6000 all the time. Sopposedly, there is a diode or two that are on the pcb that go bad causing the tach to read wrong.

Well i got a 92' silverado running on a 305 manual and in OD(5th) at around that speed im usually running @2000-2200 and redline at 5. And i mean if your shifting at around 2500rpms then it would seem right that your 5th gear rpm is right. should mainly be around the 2000-2500 range if it drops below 1500 then prolly be a drop in oil pressure(piston damage).
