Well, that depends. Does it have a Turbo I or a Turbo II?

??

Hey Polygon I have no idea what turbo it has (sorry) its my friends car heres all the info he gave me:

1987 DODGE LANCER hatchback 4dr ENGINE: 2.2L efi turbo ohc

I have not looked under his car's hood but, even if I did I wouldn't know where the turbo is located and what kind it is. I know I could located if I took a look at it but, how would I know which type it is? We are both newbies to turbos, can you please explain whats the diff. between a turbo I and a Turbo II ?? Thank you

Well, chances are you have the Turbo I. You can tell if you have a Turbo II or a Turbo I by looking next to the overflow reservoir attached to the radiator. If there is something that looks like another small radiator then that is the stock intercooler and you would have a Turbo II. If not, then you have a Turbo I. The differences are mainly that the Turbo I does not have an intercooler and it uses a Mitsubishi TE04H turbo @ around 5-7 PSI. The Turbo II has an intercooler and uses a Garrett T03 Turbo @ around 11-14 PSI. There are a lot of other differences but those are the main ones.

As for how much boost you can run, not enough to hurt the engine, I would venture to say 14 PSI at the most with a stock intercooler and some Turbo II injectors. After that the small TE04H just runs out of steam.
