o2 sensors

I have a 96 a4 2.8 12v. My check engine light keeps going on and then off-oxygen sensors. When it is on, my car runs on a reduced power mode. I ve had them checked and even replaced, but it keeps happening. Anyone have similar experiences with o2 sensor problems. Any suggestions or advice greatly appreciated.

Do you know the number of the code that is causing the CEL to come on? Whoever checked out your car should be able to give you this number. From there, it will be much easier to diagnose the problem.

As for now, without that code there is tons of things that would turn on a CEL. Could be something as basic as not tightening your gas cap to your Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor to the injectors being dirty from low quality fuel. Try to get the code number and post it here.

I dont know the code now, is there a way to find out via the climate control display method.? I just learned about how you can check codes with the climate display by holding down the "recirculation" button. I dont have an OBD II tool to check via the computer port, and most places will charge for this. Im just trying to avoid an expensive repair if itis something i can fix myself. In the past the light has gone on for a month, then turned off on its own, and then the car runs great again, now it is on again, and running at a reduced rate, which sucks, I always use premium fuel. Hmmm...

Yes, there is a way to find out via the climate control. Any trouble codes that are stored will be listed in number 1. Here is a list of the trouble codes that could be displayed there. Take a look and let us know what it is. http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int6.shtml

scroll halfway down for the DTC's. It's only a partial list, so your code might not be listed there. i have a 96 and tried using the method listed on the sight but I cant get the code to pop up. I can get the 1c but when I hit the temp to try to read the code the 1c changes to 2c all the way to 70c?

You have to hit the "recirculate button" to get the 1c, 2c, etc to evaluate.

When I checked like it says to, by going to 1c, and hitting recirculate, it gives me a zero value. which according to these pages means everything is ok, right? An interesting bit of info also which might help...my 86 4000q and now my 96 a4q, both had this thing where the temp and oil press. gauges kind of go on and off at will. Some days they wont come onfor a long time, other days they just go flat while Im driving. I dont know if this is a ground problem or a thermostat problem, but I m not sure how to check either??

Another note, when you go into the climate control like mentioned above, go to 17c, hit the recirculate button, and then whilke you are driving your speed will be displayed in km/hr, its pretty sweet.

Since Im getting responses, anyone have an opinion on which springs are best for lowering wiithout making the ride too harsh? I want a decent drop, and want it to be sportier, just not rough or too jarring.
What about a good insert too, my stock ones have gone to garbage. Im not looking to spend a ton, I dont need the absolute best. Just want to improve the look and handling. Thanks
