External oil pump on 99 Amigo with 3.2?

Posting this for a friend. He has a 99 Amigo that went low on oil (had two quarts left) and the motor locked up on him. Just trying to figure out if it's toast or maybe start with the oil pump because it seized. Tried using a breaker bar to crank it manually but didn't work.
Do these motors have a tendency of locking up like this? The oil was pitch black but it did have 2 quarts or so left in it when it happened. Thanks for all replies.
