Air Bag light coming on.

I've got a 98 windstar that is having several problems right now. The one I will discuss in this thread is the Air Bag light. For a few months now the light has been coming on & appears to be flashing a code 32 several times & then stays on steady. My wife has talked with a service manager at the local Ford dealer & he said it was something in the steering column causing this problem.

Has anybody had or seen this problem that would be willing to give more information?

Re: Air Bag light coming on.

My point of reference is a '99 model... I would think the codes are the same for your model. I am looking in a shop manual at section 501-20B. You might want to find a copy and read also.

CAUTION: Airbags (secondary restraint systems) are very dangerous to work on! Do not attempt to service these systems yourself unless you are highly skilled and know the precautions to take!

What you are observing is a Lamp Fault Code (LFC)..... there is also a corresponding Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC).

LTC code #32 corresponds to DTC code#B1932, and does infer "Driver air bag circuit resistance high"... which would likely be in the steering column ... most likely in something called the "air bag sliding contact" or "clockspring".
