squeaky brakes

i have a 99 4runner with 107,000 miles, the brakes work great but they squeak when i do a "good" breaking job (slowly press down to gradualy reduce speed), but dont squeak if i slam on them. I had the brake pads and such looked at my a mechanic, and he said my brake pads were in great condition.
how do i get rid of the squeaking..it drives me up the wall...

Re: squeaky brakes

Buy better quality pads and make sure the rotors are in good condition.

Re: squeaky brakes

Sometimes non Toyota brand brake pads tend to squeak, so next time try switching to OEM. And see if you notice the difference. I recently put on new brakes and I have had them for about 2,000 miles. New cals, rotors, and pads. And I hear squeaking, I have also heard alot of people say that OEM pads are much better too.

i replaced my front brakes and rotors on my 99 4runner a little over a year ago and did not use OEM parts. it took a while for them to "wear in." i had some vibrations for a few months as well as some squeaking, but those are gone now. one problem is brake dust. if you don't like it, use OEM parts...i wish i did.

Re: squeaky brakes

Jack up front til tires are off ground.....make sure your calipers are not sticking by seeing if you can turn front wheels fairly easy(toyota 4runners are bad about pistons in calipers sticking)....then remove wheels, remove brake pads, place pad contact face down on flat surface and see how far away the *squeeler*is from making contact(if it makes contact..replace pads)...now take some course cloth backed sandpaper(machanists grade/emery coth)and rough up contact surface of pads and inner and outter sides of rotor lightly(remove glaze/mirror smooth surface)...then reassm.

It worried about excessive heat building up and such....Long slow steady braking by the way is almost as bad as riding with foot on brake pedal and can cause your brakes to glaze up also....some say *feathering*(press, release, press, release and hold down last of way)brakes is best for them or to be agressive now and again and mix up braking process..but hey, just stop the thing already before it hits.Right?lol

P.S. Now would be a goodtime to adjust rear brakes (unless rotors also)and parking brake....goodluck
