Tranny

another problem...the tranny...now im a mitsubishi owner and tech person but have never really worked with jaguars but when i drive my moms car and get on it, it takes forever to shift the gear and if you let off of it, it seems like it keeps going and then throws you back, like the tranny is slipping. the motor only has 22000miles on it. is this normal or is my moms tranny slipping. with the problems we've had with the jag. i must say its a pretty crappy ass car for the money we paid. if i can get someones help on this it would be great.

The automatic in the X-Type is a 5 speed with lock up clutch. It also is adaptive - which means it learns from the driver's habits. It's also capable of engaging the lock-up clutch in any gear. Your mom's car has learned your mother's driving habits, and, it will take some time for the car to re-adapt to yours. I've found that mine is reluctant to downshift smartly until the engine and tranny are fully warmed up, and, I'll get a bit of lurch if I back off the gas just as the lock-up clutch engages. Hope you aren't trying to smoke the tires on her X. Isn't going to happen - they're all-wheel drive. Want to blow the cobwebs out - find a nice deserted interstate, let the car warm up good, and drop the hammer. At 3000RPM the VVT will give you a huge power boost, and, another power boost at 4000RPM. When she winds out and hits the rev limiter, you'll be eyeballing about 130 MPH on the speedo. You don't get much sensation of acceleration with the X because of the AWD and the 3500 pound curb weight. The car will simply spool up the speedo with gas turbine smoothness. My car, with the 2.5 liter, will do 0-60 in about 8.5 seconds. Yours should be about a full second faster with the larger engine.

My X doesn't launch near as good as the 69 Olds 4-4-2 I owned years ago either. However, as a high speed interstate flyer, I don't miss all the vibration and sloppy suspension the Olds had. At around 100 the Olds was a handfull to keep under control. Enjoy both your cars - they each have their own good attributes.

Your right about that. The day we purchased the Jag, my wife was driving it home on the interstate. I looked at the speedo and told her she'd better slow down before the cops nailed her. She had no idea she was doing just under a 100.

Re: Tranny

if the tranny doesnt change you can alway have the garage upgrade the transmision computer because they can there should be a newer softwear version for it and this may change your driving a lot make it smoother ( i know cos i work at a jag dealer )

I thought the dealers did the upgrades automatically when the cars came in for the 10K interval service. I suspect that's what happened to mine. Ater my 20K service - I notced that my 2.5 automatic was making noticeably more power and the tranny was shifting much crisper.

I have found that when driving my X it helps out alot to use the J-gate over in the 2-3-4 mode when in town and hustling around corners slap her in second take a sharp corner at 30+mph and gun the Cat and she leaps out and winds to 6500rpm quick click third and back off fast or your running well past 60mph at the top of second bottom of third. Also the engaging the sport shift button (big button with S on it helps the tranny and really livings up the car it doesn;t shift up as fast so you stay in your powerband longer). God I love my new Cat.
