300Z Transmission Problems
My son has a 1985 300zx with an automatic. He has been having trouble getting it to go from second to third gear and to go into reverse. Does anyone have any cheap ideas?

You might try and change the filter and fluid and see it that helpsi if not I'm afraid it's rebuild time.

also, if it has a tranny computer, might wanna check and see if the harness is on there tight. but 9 times out 10 your gonna need a rebuild or it would probably be cheaper to pick one up from the local wrecking yard.

Re: 300Z Transmission Problems

Re: 300Z Transmission Problems
speaking of rebuilding trannys. exactly how hard is it to rebuild your own tranny. say you have a manual of the tranny with a step by step process of a full overhaul, how difficult is it??? anybody done it?

Re: 300Z Transmission Problems
I've rebuild a chysler automatic transaxle and a couple of Ford MTXs and a few Borg-Warner manual transmissions. I will say this much, if you are dealing with a MT then you will need a press and a few other higher end tools, you will definatly need a good magnet, and a dial gauge and a torque wrench. Otherwise its pretty easy if not knuckle busting work. The hard part is remembering which gear goes with which gear...... dont get them confused, it will fit back together with the wrong gear setup, and will eat itself. Most of the time all that needs to be replaced is the synchros. All in all if you have had no training or seen it done then get someone who has done it before to help you or do it for you while you help them.
As for ATs, I dont suggest you do them at all, alot of small check balls you can lose and they HAVE TO go back where they came from otherwise you have the trans fluid headed to the wrong gears........ this is fustrating but not damaging.... you just wont have 1-3 gear or 2-4 gear or sometimes rev. Untill you get them back in the right place. I am speaking from experiance there. |

Re: 300Z Transmission Problems
sometimes I like rebuilding things, but its alot easier to R&R it, (Remove and Replace). But keep the old one take it apart and see if you can figure it out. If you figure it out and fix it, then hey you have a spare that you could either sell or keep incase the new/used one goes out.
