Thumbs up Smoking Blazer **Updated 10-23**

Ive noticed some Blue Smoke comming from my Blazer and I cant figure out where its comming from..Sometimes it hardly smokes at all and sometimes its more noticable...Its is not useing any oil (no changes on dipstick on lvl)

I just had the Oil changed and went to Moble1 Syn Blend High Mileage

Ive not had it long and heres what i know and have been told...When the oil was changed it was over filled 1qt...I didnt do this...Ive read one being over filled will cause smoking..If so, how long usally till it stops or will it even stop? if thats the cause...

Ive also been told that the O2 sen can cause one to smoke if its going bad or could be the valve seals or something...

The CHK Eng light is not on

89 S10 Blazer 4.3 (190,500 Miles)

Any help/Info would be great!

Re: Smoking Blazer...

Blue smoke IS oil.
O2 will not cause this. Valve seals will.
To much oil is a no-no and could cause you to get a low oil pressure problem because to much oil in the block will get wipped up by the crankshaft(lots of foam) and block the oil pick up tube.
Drain out the exess asap. The smoke is cause by oil be picked up by the bottom of the pistons and rings and put in the the cylinders. Also the pcv system is sucking the oil up and blowing it out of the exhaust.
+ oil fouled plugs , gum on the EGR valve just to name a few things

Its been drained...It was 1qt over before i had the oil changed...I misstyped it to sound like it over full now....
If that is/was the problem...How long before it goes away...If it dont im guessing the Valve Seals sence theres no oil loss...

Re: Smoking Blazer...

I have see it where switching to syn blend oil can cause this problem also. The old valve seals and guides and rings just cant handle the switch.
Not sure what else I can tell you

Re: Smoking Blazer...

Too many miles on that engine to be switching to synthetic in my mind.

Stick to dino oil. Synthetic is just too thin for your engine.

It was smoking before i had it changed...Sence it was change its been running like new money side from the smoke..

I used moble1 10w30 syn blend..Ive had no problems sence the change over...I was just woundering where it was 1qt over filled before i changed it could of been the trouble maker...

I guess if it doesnt stop in a few days..Ill asume its the Valve Seals and have them suckers changed...

Re: Smoking Blazer...

Not actually seeing what it looks like, if it is the valve seals, you will smoke on startup, the dreaded GM puff, especially after sitting overnight.

If the engine has never had them done, it is definetely time. I did my '93 back in '00 and since have done a few. GM has upgraded seals, use them and no one elses'. The job is easy, you don't have to pull the heads.

190,000 Miles...Im not sure if theyve ever been changed or not..I would guess no...

By keeping track of the lvl on the dipstick..It is not burning off no Oil...Ive tracked for 3 weeks...Im pretty sure its the Valve Seals..

My dad is a salesman for Chevy and can get me all GM parts for 10% over cost..I chked with him today and i can get the upgraded seals for around 16.00 for the set..

Im going to get these changed....Id do it myself if i was sure i had all the tools needed and knew how..I need to get one of those manls but, my local store doesnt have them in for my blazer..They said they should have some soon... Can ya get a quick sumery of whats needed and what to do so, i can make the call to try it myself or goto my mech guy...I dont mind trying it myself if its not hard...I love learning how to do repairs myself

My 93 used to smoke on start-up until I changed that piece of junk Fram oil filter! I put the Mobil 1 oil filter on and 5w 30 Mobil Drive Clean oil in, and the smoking stopped!

Re: Smoking Blazer...

Ok hellbilly, here goes:

You will need to remove all six plugs. Then the valve covers (new gaskets). You will need to make an air chock out of an old plug or use a compression guage line so that you can charge each cylinder with air, for example:

Say you are doing #1 first, you screw in the air chock (sparkplug hole), attach the air line from your compressor and that will charge the cylinder up and possibly rotate the engine and put the piston at bottom(the air pressure will keep the valve from falling into the cylinder when you remove the keeper and spring). Now you use a spring compressor to compress the valve spring allowing you to remove the keepers. When you have removed the keepers, you can slide the spring up and off of the valve stem while it is still compressed. You can now change the seals. After the seals have been replaced, reverse the process. This is done on all six.

I will tell you this, if you do not have enough experience, you might consider having a reputable mechanic do this or have an experienced mechanic help you and you will learn something. IMHO, a day without learning is one less day in your life that is wasted.

Mikado14
is right
If you loose 1 of those keepers for the spring well that will just make a bad day worse.

Re: Smoking Blazer...

and just a note from experience cover the heads and engine top with a clean cloth, if you drop a keeper it sure makes life easier to retrieve
