Trany Problem!

Hey out there. I need some advice. My 97 Contour w/ ATX and 2.0 Z is haveing some problems with the trany. After about an hour of steady driving my O/d Lights starts to blink. After that you can shut off the car while its moving and get the light to go away but when you stop and try to go again the trany slams into gear from first to second gear untill it sits for about four hours. After it sits it will shift hard once then it is fnie untill you drvie for about an hour. The car has 72,000 mile on it, no mods, bone stock, all maintance was proformed to the book sinse I got it at 40,000 miles. This light just came a couple weeks ago. Id drop the fluid out of it but I dont really see sence it it yet because its early and why change the oil and not the filter. From what im told that filter is a pain in the ass to change. Maybe im wrong, I D K. Any Ideas or advise would be greatly helpful. Im going crazy over this. Ive been wanting to "pimp" out this car but if its something really bad its getting a for sale sign on it. Also WTB set of cheap 16 or 17 SVT wheels w/ or w/o rubber.

next time the light is on, drive by a local autozone and theyll pull the code for free. Ask them for the code and if they cant diagnose it, i will. As for the svt wheels, my friend is selling some 16" E1 wheels with 8 tires on ebay. Reserve is set at $450. Might want to check into www.batinc.net or tirerack.com. They sell 16" contour wheels and 17" svt focus wheels as well.

they should be able to just plug into your obd 2 port in the drivers side footwell and pull the codes as normal.

I think it is kinda dangerous to turn OFF the engine while the vehicle is moving because the steering wheel will lock up and you end up in a crash.

I would try to remove the transmission filter out by turning it slowly left and right while trying to pull it down. Most of the time the filter breaks apart and I have to pull the metal part of the filter that goes to the hole with a pliers PITA. I use some dead blow hammer (rubber) to put back a new filter back in. Test the vehicle and if the problem still persists then try the TCC solenoid test. The TCC solenoid might be failing. Try disconnecting the TCC solenoid connector instead (accessible from the engine bay) and see if you still have some problem.

I think he means, turn off the car and leave the keys in the ignition. Your still able to turn the steering wheel, but have no power steering.
