Network Nerd Help: Finding my WAP's IP

h0dy all,
I have a Netgear WAP running on our network. It used to have a static IP of 192.168.1.227. I had to reset it yesterday - and now I can't find the IP of the bastard to log in to it.

Any ideas? Have tried port scanning 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.255 to no avail.

well by reseting it should have turned back to its original factory setting. It should be listed in your manual.


Anyway i looked on netgear's website and chose a model at random since I did not know which one you had. Anyway its ip adress was: 192.168.0.1 this was for the dg 834 model. Chances are good that this might be the correct one for yours too since companies often use the same default ip for their routers.

Try 192.168.0.227

My Draytek router is on 192.168.1.1 and the default, which POssibleSideEffect correctly listed isn't working - although the router is working fine. Can use/connect etc.

Could I connect one of our laptops to it and run a netstat or similar to get it?

blech i didn't notice, and yeah that is the default.


anyway OZ try this:

Log in using the netbios name

1.Determine the NetBIOS name of your access point.
To find the NetBIOS name, refer to the labels on the bottom of your access point. The access
point NetBIOS name is formed from the word “NETGEAR” and last 6 digits of the access
point’s MAC address on the label on the bottom of the unit. It is formatted like
“NETGEAR123456” with no spaces or delimiters.
Note: If the computer you are using to connect to the WG602 v2 is on a different subnet, you
will not be able to connect via its NetBIOS name unless there is a WINS server on your LAN.


2. Open a Web browser such as Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.

3. Log in to the WG602 v2 using the NetBIOS name you found on the bottom of the unit.
In this example, you see NETGEAR123456 in the browser address or location box. There is no space between “NETGEAR” and the 6 digits of the access point name.You do not need to
include “www” or “http://.”

4. A login window should open

Good idea Neutrino! Just tried it and it didn't work. Checked I had netbios installed, didn't, so installed it. Still doesn't work

It is a netgear WG602v2 and the AP Name is: netgearA33179.

Any more help0r?

make sure that the PC's IP your are trying to access it from is on the wap's IP range.

You might what to try to reset it again. maybe it had some weid bug and it did not properly reset in the first time. Make sure to hold the reset button for a full 10 sec

and last but not least get a baseball bat and start hitting it.



EDIT: I just though of something:

Get a PC and connect it directly to the wap via cat5 cable. Then configure the PC with a static IP address of 192.168.0.210 and
255.255.255.0 for the Subnet Mask

then with that pc acess the wap via its ip: 192.168.0.227

Might have to do the static thingo with a directly connected PC. PITA though. Bastard of a problem, eh?

I know what you mean. Small problems can turn out to be major pita.

Check and ensure that all necessary configuration are there for a connection (MAC address, bit of encryption, etc). If its reset its probably not programmed with the right attributes to log onto the network, so double check that first unless you have already fixed the problem I would just ignore this.
