transfer case oil

I ordered a new ring and pinion for my front differential because it is making a grinding noise. I checked my transfer case oil today, it is the color of used motor oil. Do I need to replace the clutch pack in the transfer case, or anything? Or can I get away with just changing the t-case fluid

the fluid should be red (dextron 3 )or the new autotrk 3 fluid which is light blue. used motor oil apperance would suggest burned oil.How does it smell?
