Steering Clunk, Pop.

I have a 98 Grand Cherokee 4.0L.

I have this noise and it is located somewhere in the steering. Sitting in park with jeep running, i turn the wheel completely to the right, i hear a one time clunk or pop . I turn the wheel completely to the left, i hear a one time clunk or pop. What could be causing this, i have new CV joints, rotors and brakes upfront. Its just annoying your while parking and i want to get this solved before it leads into something worse.

I just got my power steering pump replaced at a local jeep dealership here in Mo-town, and this just started. This problem does not exist while traveling down the road. I tightened all my lugs in the front thinking that they might be lose, didnt solve anything. If anyone could help, drop me a post, i would GREATLY APPRECIATE IT!!!

Re: Steering Clunk, Pop.

kinda sounds like a cv joint. if the boots are good then the joints are likely to be good too. also look at tie rod ends.

tire rod ends.....

I know it cant be the cv joints, just replaced those 5k miles ago + the boots are in good condition. Could be the tie-rod ends.....is there anything specific i should look for in the tire rod ends????????

Has anyone else noticed that cold weather brings out all the "weird noises" in Jeeps??

Jack up the front of the Jeep and turn the wheels and see if you hear anyhting. If nothing grab tire top and bottom and see if you can move it at all. I have ahd bad wheel hubs act like that.

Re: Steering Clunk, Pop.

something is loose, hard to tell what from here but as said jack it up and have someone turn the wheel while you watch and LISTEN. if its only popping once then it aint the CV joints because of the nature of the design.
