Oil Problems

Hi.... I have a 1997 Toyota Corolla CE with a 1.6 litre engine. It burns oil all of the time no matter what I do to it. It has 126,800 miles on it. There was a point where the previous owner did not change the conventional oil for 17,000 miles. I changed it at 81,000. I have tried 5W-30 and 10W-30 in it to stop the burning. No difference. Someone told me to use 20W-50 in it and another person suggested 0W-20. This is going to drive me nuts to keep on having to put a qaurt in every 700 miles. Is there someone who knows what weight I should try?

thanks in advance

--anyone have the first clue? Also, another weight.... 5-20?

sludge

You might be right....... there was a period of time when this car did not recieve an oil change for 17k miles (conventional oil). Don;t ask me why because I didn't own the car. LOL. This could have caused my trouble. Which weight of oil shuold I go with........ 5W-20 or 0W-20. I have tried 5 and 10-30 in it and no luck. Someone sad that the 20 weights could be better in this situation. Thank you!

Re: Oil Problems

Hi Zeek1403,

Not all that up on things aside from finding that info while looking into my own Corrolla problem... Mine apparently is that oil is blowing past valves seals and the repair according to the mechanic is to replace those seals at about $1000... the kicker is that he says that may not fix anything...

As far as oil weight goes. I am NOT an expert on anything mechanical but my Amzoil buddy says heavier weight oil to prevent burning is ancient thinking. I think the gist is that at engine heat they are all thin enough to go anywhere...
