Question on Redline'ing

I've been scared thus far (currently @ 3,500 miles on my 04 LS) to redline my Cavy. It's an auto, and I have two questions.

1. What is the redline? Is it 5500 or 6500? Because at 5500 it has a dotted red line, and at 6500 it turns to a solid red line. Is 5500 the warning like, "woah dude careful or you're gonna redline", or is it the actual redline?

2. CAN I redline? I've noticed that everytime I get close to 5500, it quickly shifts. Is there something built in that shifts to the next highest gear no matter what when I get to 5500? Is my car alive?

Re: Question on Redline'ing

if you have an automatic transmission you cant really redline. Dont worry, floor it away it wont damage the car. Its designed to run within the limits its allowed to for safety and reliability.

Re: Question on Redline'ing

Is it a lot of wear and tear on the motor to floor it? I've never floored it, but i've gotten close to redlining in first and second just by pressing a little more than halfway... It probably won't matter either way, since I plan on trading it in before I even hit the warranty of 36k.

I have a question on mods, I have the standard GM warranty, will putting on an intake void it? The most I'd want to do to it is exhaust, header and intake, but I really don't like the loud fart noise of those exhausts... so intake would be first.

Will there even be a noticable difference with an intake? I understand its only a 4-7 hp gain at the wheels at max.

Re: Question on Redline'ing

what i heard is that if you put alot of pressure on the new metal peices in the engine, it will make the imperfections worse because you havent givin them enough time to become coated in oil. the intake thing, yes only a few hp will be gained, but it will have a meaner sound. you have better benefits with an intake when you have more stuff done to your engine.

Re: Question on Redline'ing

I'm not exactly planning on redline'ing it every time or anything, I was curious if it was even possible to redline.

Also, I'm still wondering if the redline is at 5500 /w the dotted line or 6500 /w the solid line?

And should I still wait a couple thousand more miles before I floor it? like 5k miles.

When you say more stuff done to the engine, do you mean headers and exhaust? Or are you referring to internal components such as cams?
