Different oil viscosity for winter?
Does anyone here run a different grade oil in the winter versus summer?
Curious if I should; I never have before. I've always ran 10W-30 in the summer/winter here in Colorado, but I now live in the mountains where it gets even colder at night, and the truck sits outside. What do you all think.

Re: Different oil viscosity for winter?
I'm in Wisconsin and I just stick to the same oil. If you want to, switch of synthetic for the winter (might be a bad idea on your older truck). Or install an oil pan heater and plug it in at night (they work great).

Re: Different oil viscosity for winter?
So are you using 10W-30 as well?
I'm actually not interested in synthetic, I change my oil every 2500-3K miles, so it would be pointless to do synthetic for me anyway. I'm just not sure if I should switch to 5W-30 or not.

I'd go with 5w-30 if your temps get down to the teens or less. But then again, your at 130K miles with your current plan, so why change?
FWIW, I used to run 10w-30 in the warmer months & 5w-30 all winter, now I just stick with 5w-30 all the time. Never noticed any type of difference between the two. My rodeo will fall apart (Buffalo NY winters) LONG before any issues related to oil viscosity ranges.G/luck Joel

Re: Different oil viscosity for winter?
I just switched to 5w30 from 10. Mainly because thats what the castrol guy from my dads work has been giving him but alot of people switch to it for the cold winter months.
