Added some unique and interesting F1 items to my collection...

...and I figured this crowd would be interested in seeing them.

The one I'm most excited about is this - the emblem from the rear grille of GTR #10R (reportedly anyway). I was told, as the description on the rear outlines, that Steve Soper crashed that car while McLaren was undergoing ABS testing using it. I was aware that #10R was used by the factory in an effort to develop ABS for the longtail GTRs, so the story is fairly believable. There's really nothing wrong with the emblem, save for a small bend on the upper right corner where the silver coating has come off. I guess McLaren felt it was in need of replacing. It appears to be brass underneath, though I'm not certain of that. Also, the red line around the outside seems like an inlay using some kind of red metallic paint.

= = = = = =

Second on my list is this rather unique 'McLaren F1' keyfob, made of carbon fiber in the shape of the McLaren "Swoosh" logo. This seems to be a different keyfob than what actually came with the cars, but I'm told by the seller that her boyfriend worked for McLaren Cars and that it came from there. Given the quality of the piece, its not something just anyone could make, and I'm inclined to believe her. I suspect that it may have been a prototype that was ultimately not chosen, but I still find it very cool to have. I'm tempted to actually use it for its intended purpose on my own keychain, but I really don't want it getting all scratched up so I'll probably just keep it on the shelf. I included the pictures with the quarter to give a true impression of the size. Also every 10 squares on the graph paper equals 1 inch.

= = = = = =

Interestingly enough - the auction for the rear 'McLaren' badge from GTR #10R also included this smaller 'McLaren' badge, even though it wasn't mentioned in the auction description. The seller never really explained why he included it, but I'm not complaining. It's about 2" long, by 1/2" in height and it's rather thick too.

I believe this emblem came off the front cover of the hardbound version of the F1 'Launch Brochure'. The hardcover version comes up on Ebay rather infrequently and I believe I have seen it sell for nearly $1000 You can see the emblem on the cover in this reference photo I have here:

= = = = = =

Someting else I acquired that I think is very cool is this 1995 LeMans T-shirt. I've never seen this before anywhere, so I think it's quite unique. The picture isn't the best of course, but I happen to think it's a great choice considering that race was really won by J.J. Lehto in the middle of the night in the rain where he consistently lapped the track much faster than any car out there. It really gave the #59 car an advantage that no other team was able to overcome. Mighty impressive!

Here's a close up on the caption - there was also a GTR that finished 13th place, but I guess 13th isn't something to brag about.

= = = = = =

I've added some more pins to my collection. It makes me mad when I have to bid against "pin collectors" to win these btw. Who collects random assortments of lapel pins? I just don't get it.

= = = = = =

Now this next item is really no big deal - I already had one of the newer versions with the different nose and single-plane wing, so it wasn't like I was hurting for an LM in my diecast collection. What makes this item special was I only paid $11.75 for it. How did I do this you might ask? Well the seller listed the item as "SUPERB MCLAREN F1 LOTUS-1/24 SCALE ON BASE". Obviously the name is wrong, but the scale was wrong too. I could tell by looking at the photos from the auction that the seller had gotten it all wrong and that this actually was the rare double-plane winged UT LM. I also knew there was no 1/24th scale version of the LM floating around out there which is probably what threw most people. Unfortunately, the spoiler broke off during shipping to me, but I can glue it back so I'm not so concerned - especially given the price I paid. -hehe

The LM looks pretty cool without it's wing - but I wouldn't suggest any owners go taking their's off, of course.

= = = = = =

Last but not least is this new 2005 calendar I picked up at Borders with photos taken by Ron Kimball. It has this great shot of 'XP1 LM' on one of the calendar pages which was also chosen for the cover. This will be one of those things I'll have to scan when I finally get one of those nifty contraptions.

= = = = = =

So that's it for now as far as noteworthy stuff goes. If you have something interesting to share, and I know many of you do, feel free to include it here with some decent photos.

Excellent finds Peloton!

Have a friend who is looking for the McLaren emblems. I told him with major sarcasm... Good Luck. If I ever find one, I will not be sharing it.

Have seen those pins but am hoping the local track guys will have them in stock at the next race. Found a couple of the "F1" pins the last time along with the #59 Ueno Clinic pin.

Regards,

Those are some great items, the carbon work on that keychain does look very well done, so it could very and truly be the prototype key fob. Also, I have the same 24 hrs. of Lemans T-Shirt pictured above. Great Stuff..

Yeah - you don't have to tell me that. Of course the seller then tried to charge me about $40 for shipping from the UK to the USA, but I informed him that I knew it should be much cheaper and he was able to adjust the price to about half.

Now that I know you are looking for one, if I see one come up for a decent price, I will let you know. I think this opportunity was a total fluke - most people selling these things know what it is that they have.

BTW: If it's any consolation - I paid out my ear for the badges and the keyfob. :

No doubt. There was an article in classic and sports car a while back about this guy who collected McLaren f1 stuff. He had the badge and said it was the only one that had been given to a member of the public. Keep it safe man. You deserve it.

Any chance you could scan that article, or possibly tell me the date for the magazine. I missed it, and would love to check it out.
