Minimal 16G mods

Basically I'm not really ready for this at all, but since the insurance of the place is gonna be covering this (read my TURBO IS SCREWED!!! thread), I'm gonna have to go along with it, hehe ....but basically I have a 98 GS-T bone stock except fora boost controller set at 13psi, boost gauge, and K&N. The insurance money will cover an OEM T-25, or is willing to go for an aftermarket Evo III 16G (might have to cover any difference) which will be installed by a shop of the insurance companies choice. Of course I want the 16G....but would it even work in the car at this point?!?! I'm def. low on cash right now, so buying a DSM link, Fuel Pump, Injectors, and downpipe w/ cat-back & test pipe, and intake manifold will ALL come later. Would it work if I just set the boost really low for now, and then not really run the car hard (at all) until I have all the supporting mods in? or could I still run the car hard at low boost, but just wait for all the supporting mods until I put the boost up. Or should I just stick with a brand new T-25 covered by insurance? I'm leaning towards the 16G since its gonna be replaced anyways, might as well replace it with a MUCH better turbo, but I want some other opinions on this...

It should be fine except your stock BOV might start leaking if you go 14 psi or higher.

Re: Minimal 16G mods

It will be fine if you keep bost low. The trouble is creep. Keep the stock exhaust for now to avoid that problem. If it doesnt creep and you keep boost around 12 psi I dont see any potential trouble. The biggest issue with this is someone will lose a race, and turn it up "just once" and cause some damage. If you have good self control, I would go for it and get that mod out of the way.

Re: Minimal 16G mods

I have a stock t-2small that is still in good shae, you could get the insurance to buy a 16g and get the shop to install the t2small till you are ready to go with the 16g.

Re: Minimal 16G mods

I think I'm just gonna go with an Evo 16G, or even a regular 16G, and just run the boost low for now...anyone else think i might run into problems?

Only if you buy the install kit and have them do it, and make sure they know wtf they are doing installing a mitsu turbo on a 2g.

I have a bunch of friends that could install it with me that have worked with DSM's and other turbo cars and whatnot. But the insurance company wants it installed by a shop and such, so I'll probably look around for a really good shop for DSM's in the SoCal area and get it installed there w/ the kit. I just hope the EB16G will be able to run on low boost with a pretty much stock setup that will slowly get upgraded. If not, then its either a 14B, a BT28 if its not too much for the insurance, or might just have to go back to the T-2small... Sure as hell dont want the T-25 back tho, lol.

Hey, just got word back from this place, and they say that it was just armor all burning that was the smoke that i saw. And they said that two mechanics, theirs and a mitsubishi mechanic said the turbo was in great condition, just that the line for the gauge hadnt been reconnected. You think that they are BS'ing me, or can armor all really smell like a turbo getting raped w/o any oil. This could go either way, but i need some diagnosis fast...please.

Hard to diagnose these things over hte internet. And I've never had armor all anywhere nar my motor. Check the shaft play, the turbo is either good or bad.

Turbo turned out to be good, same with oil, but they replaced it anyway. Gah, now I'm gonna have to actually save up for a E3B16G for later or just throw in a 14B for now, im sure a 14B should be a lot more fun that the T-25....

in fact, if any shop wants to unplug my oil line for REAL in the future and then pay for a new E316G....please, you are more than welcome. Just got my MBC and BOV dump tube cut and boost gauge back in, and things are looking good, but will be slow to upgrade (took them off when it went to shop), but so are the joys of owning a DSM. I think this story has a happy-ish ending...16G...so close but yet so far...
