Head Project

Ok burly like I was saying. I didn't get the AFR's I am gonna wait till next year get the stroker and AFR's all at once.

But getting back to the car, I've been trying to figure out why my ET's have been so crappy. The best time I've run so far was a 13.7 at 106mph which IMO is crap considering the mods I have. To make a long story short when I bought this car it supposedly had ported and polished GT40 heads. Well there ported and polished but they were not GT40 heads. I had an intake manifold leak so while fixing it I found E7TE on the underside of one of the heads. Needless to say I was not happy.

The hunt was on for something because I refuse to ride with stock heads. I would have waited for the motor but its gonna be a while before I can pull that off. I ended up finding a deal on a set of World windsor JR heads. They have a 3 angle valve job, and came with 1.7 roller rockers. They have had full bowl, intake and exhaust port work done to them. So I'm almost done putting them on I should have this beast fired up tommorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.

wow eillob, that blows...but maybe its for the best. next year when you do get the stroker and the afrs, youll be putten out way better numbers. plus teh JR's really arent that bad besides the fact that they are cast iron. and a 13.7 on stock heads w/a sn94 or 95 sure as hell isnt bad either.

ps: in case you didnt know, i just got some TFS tw's that have just gotten a valve job and have been milled to a whole lot better 58cc's. theyve had a lot of work done to them. and im not gonna tell you how much cuz itll make you cry!

you know me all too well... yeah i gottem off ebay from some guy that just wanted to rid of them. he was pretty hard core. he had them on a N/A 408 stroker and ran 10.5's all day long.. he swaped the twisted wedges for a pair of r-series.basically he just wanted the money back that he put into the valve job and the milling which was 750 but i gottem shipped for $860!! they look clean as hell.

Hey wait a minute are they bare heads, by that I mean did they come without lifters and springs? If they did I saw those heads out there. I think you outbid me you turkey!! j/k I think I do remember seeing those heads though.

Do your research before you put those on I think they require different pushrods from what you have. Those are sweet heads, hell they flow with no work, can't imagine what they do now. SO when you putting them on?

ummm they came w/ everything there. they have mechanical springs on them now but in a separate box he also sent some hyd. springs for me. i know i need new pushrods, i was gonnna get hardened ones anyways to play it safe. but what i have been contemplating lately is whether or not i should get flat topped pistons. what should i do piston wise? haha of course WHEN?? i made myself a goal to have everything in sometime around or after christmas. my bday is in feb. so i guess ill go ahead and make plans to get a dyno tune sometime around then. but right now im trying to find the guy to do my tranny work...i think im gonna get a guy that lives down the street to do it for me for 500 plus parts, so that should be interesting....when you get those heads on update me on power gains!!

What is the deal with flat top pistons? I don't understand what you would gain exept possible future clearence problems.

By the way don't forget the valve guides and roller rockers. Stud mount on twisted wedge.

That brings me to my car. Well I got the heads on but i encountered a couple of problems. This hooker didn't want to start and didn't.

I immediately thought it was timming, which it was but not initally. The problem was when I installed the roller rockers (adjustable stud mount) I didn't adjust them right I snugged them a little to much so all compression was lost. (my first time with stud mount) So obviously that ment taking the valve covers off to readjust. Anyone with any input on these feel free to jump in at any time.

Problem Two

Now that the rockers were readjusted now the timming was off. No big deal couldn't quite figure out how that happened but obviously something got moved. No problem reset the timming and fired it up. Well it ran but not quite right. Timming again played around with it. Couldn't get it to run right even with the timming light. OK maybe I am off a tooth or two with the distributer. Pulled it turned it one notch and bam fired right up sounded pretty good it just needed a little fine tunning. I put the timming light on it and the timming numbers are no where near where there supposed to be. Now I am confused. There is a timming bracket down there thats nothing like whats in the book and I'm having problems trying to figure out exactly what part of this bracket I'm supposed to use to get this thing timmed. Illl let you know what I find.

Flat-top pistons will raise CR which will increase your HP. Now you need to understand how to calculate what you need generally for valve clearance so you can get flat-tops with the proper valve reliefs. This way you get more CR which equals more HP without valve-clearance problems.

Re: Head Project

More than likely flat tops with 58cc chambers will put you way over a pump gas cr. Probably around 11+ :1 on a 302.
